Pulmonary rehab

I wonder if anyone has any views on Pulmonary rehab classes?

My worry is, picking up things from others coughing etc., I know that sounds awful but having had several bouts of pnemonia, once picked up because I visited a friend in hospital, 2 weeks later I was in!! I had TB in 2014, the drugs left me like a zombie, I have bronchiectasis and pseudomonus which I could easily pass on to others too. I also have COPD, I really do feel very vulnerable!! I am excercising locally at the gym, taking things slowly, when I had my review this year the nurse was very impressed with my improvement. Do I really need to put myself and others at risk?

Hi

The atmosphere will be little difference than your local gym, mine was done in a gym hall well aired, small group of people.

The extra benefit is the education side.

Hello! I have been in Rehab in the US for about 5 weeks now! All of it has made me stronger, and the tidbits I learn help me so much in different situations! In rehab after we use the equipment , we are to wash it down with a sanitary cloth. Also, no one can come in sick! Sick? Stay home! Hope this helps! Janet127

Thank you Janet127, I was told that everyone would use the gel after using the equipmment but they didn't!! I think I will bring it up at the next meeting X

Hi angie. Just to put your mind at rest on one of your worries. There is a misconception that bronchiectasis patients colonised with pseudomonas can infect others. This has come about because studies showed that cf patients with certain strains of pseudomonas can sometimes pass it between themselves. This happens because of the nature of their condition and the particular vulnerability of their lungs.

Finally they have done research into whether bronchs can pass pseudomonas berween themselves or to well people and the results have proved that we cannot. As I raised two children and have led a normal social life and have never infected anyone with anything I would have thought that common sense would have told us this.

However, I very much share your anxiety of being infected by other people - particularly by my nemesis - viruses kindly donated to me by ‘well’ people who insist on spraying them about when they should stay home.

Stay well and enjoy your rehab.

Over the last 8 years I have under gone 3 PR's and all have been extremely helpful but I am delaying a 4th because I feel I can manage my own exercise regime with the help of a local "sit and get fit" class once a week. But I do use "First Defense" which I buy from Boots and wash my hands constantly especially if I use any equipment.

PR was the best thing I did after my diagnosis in 2015, which I requested after seeing others' posts on this site about the benefits of it. Infectious people stayed away; coughers were those with non-infectious conditions. You can always use NasalGuard Cold and Flu Block and Vick's First Defence, plus antiseptic wipes, and avoid touching your eyes and face until you have washed your hands - all other tips I picked up from people posting on this site.

angie26 - pulmonary rehabilitation is useful but maybe not so much if it is making you anxious because you might not be able to get the most out of it. Could you ask for a visit from a community physiotherapist to give you some guidance on suitable exercise?
