NIVI Mask and Facial Sores

Hi there, for the last 2 weeks I have now at night got to go on a NIVI machine for around 7 hours. I have been put on this as my C02 is very high while i awaite a lung transplant.

I am getting use to it now although in the morning when i take it off i am sometimes left with red chaffing around the sides of my face where the mask has been. This even happens when i use the dressings also. This subsides slightly through the day after appling E45 cream.

I have checked with the clinic and my mask is not too tight. My question is does anyone else experience this and what cream do them use to help the red ring around the nose and cheeks.

Thank you all.

Hi Joe I have also had a good beating by the niv mask and am still scarred to this day 18 months on .... the problem was the actual size of the mask which because the nurse on shift at the time said that's the only mask they do it was far too tightly fitted and caused me severe black eyes and scars on my nose top either side where the straps had been ...oh them days were terrible until a lovely occupational therapist told me she would find a better mask to fit me ....yes they did them but the nurse I mentioned earlier just wasn't interested in helping ...she no longer works at the hosp now ( too many complaints) . The mask I eventually got was nice and small and round and also padded more ...I'm wondering what mask you are wearing . Also as for creams I would recommend a barrier cream of some sort ...Vaseline would be ideal but obviously not whilst on oxygen ...I really hope you find something as I still have a year of that bloody mask especially when I o back in hosp and I see people wearing them oh my .....I hope you get your transplant soon and have you had any news on the liklehood of this happening anytime soon ?good luck and hope you find something that helps ...mel x

I have been using an NIV machine now for nearly 3 years (following lung cancer treatment and I'm in remission). Will have to use this nightly for 8 hours for the rest of my life. It leaves me with red indents either side of my nose - not a good look - but it fades during the day and I wear makeup to cover it.
