I am going to have the pneumonia jab, but have just read some horrendous stories about after effects. Has anyone on this site got any info on the subject.

Hi Maggie, I had a 'severe local reaction' to the pneumovax shot, but continued it the following year because the thought of pneumonia was dire and to be avoided at all costs. All I made sure happen was that I stayed at the surgery a bit longer than normal after a shot of anti-histamine just in case it changed from a severe allergic reaction to anaphylaxis. It didn"t happen! All was fine. I realise this post is late, but I am glad you had the vaccine. More important than all the horror stories one can read online. We must avoid pneumonia at all costs. Hugs. BevM

I’ve been fine with mine. I feel for me it’s much safer as I’ve had some terrible chest infections which could have been much much worse without the jab.

thanks for your reply, all done now

I often react badly to drugs but had no after effects from the jab. Had the pneumonia jab in one arm and flu jab in the other. For me it was a great thing to do.

I've had the pneumonia jab and I get the flu one every year. No problems with either.

I had the pneumonia jab 4 years ago, no ill effects but it didn’t work for me. Hopefully I’ll be able to have it again next year x

Oh, sorry to hear that. Thought it was one off jab?

I think it only works on about 40% of people. I was told I could be re vaccinated after 5 years x

I had my second pneumonia jab (15 years after the first one) in 2015 with no problem after effects. But Ive had pneumonia twice this year so it's not been very effective in terms of prevention :( The most recent pneumonia was relatively mild though still requiring hospitalisation and IV drugs, but in March I had bi-lateral pneumonia and type 2 respiratory failure which was all rather grim.

Oh my, I guess its not a one size fits all then !

Not a problem, no side affects, had my first over 12 years ago have not had a top up since, its good for added protection, it doesn't guarantee you won't get pneumonia but it may improve your chances of surviving pneumonia.

Maggie, I view precautionary shots as absolutely mandatory for those of us with compromised respiratory systems. No ifs, ands or buts. These include flu, pneumonia and shingles shots. Stay well, judg69

Had mine over 2 years ago, and had no problems with it. Rather that than the possibility of worse.

I had the pneumonia jab with no problem at all other than a slight soreness in my arm for a day or two. You only need it the once so have it done

No not true that you only need it once. Some people need another after around 10 - 15 years. I had my second one three years ago.

Yep.... I had it, I know lots of people who have had it and haven’t heard any horror stories. It’s better than pneumonia!

I get jab every 5 years had one 1 month before I picked up hospital grade pneumonia with sepsis while I was in hospital with broken ribs I believe if I did not have that shot I would not be here today the doctors only gave me 10 per cent chance of surviving

Hi Maggie.

I’ve had the pneumonia jabs for years now and no side effects. I did however get pneumonia this year. Apparently there are several different sorts of pneumonia. I was unlucky enough to get one that wasn’t covered by the jab. It certainly wouldn’t put me off having it this Autumn. My advice is get it done.

Hi Maggie,

I've had a pneumonia jab originally about 20 years ago and recently had to have it redone by order of my specialist. Not had an adverse reaction to either, I think to do so you would have to be one in a million or someone allergic to eggs perhaps. Do get it done. All the best.

Hi had the pneumonia jab last October together with the Flu jab. Apart from a slightly swollen arm and a bit of tiredness no other ill effects. The pneumonia jab is supposed to last for 5 years I think, unlike flu jab every winter. Check with your GP whether it is likely to give you side effects (depending on existing meds, you wouldn't want it to cause a clash)
