Hot weather flare up IPF

Quick question: if you have a flare up of symptoms during hot/humid weather (ie a bit more breathless), when it cools down again, do your symptoms disappear? Just asking for Dad who’s worried that his IPF is worsening. I’m not sure if a flare up of symptoms in this weather is a permanent thing? Thanks

Sorry I can't help tedchester1 I don't have IPF but I hope someone who does will come along to answer you soon. I think this weather is having an effect on all of us. Try to reassure your Dad and if necessary speak to his GP or ask his consultant's secretary to pass on your question. Sheila x

Thanks Sheila. Yes, got it all covered. He’s staying in mostly and restricting his walking to on the flat rather than up hill!

Hi I think we are all feeling the heat, (we Brits are never satisfied) tell you Dad to keep taking cold water & liquids, keep out of the sun and wear a hat. The optimum heat is around 22/23. so when it gets down to that ( which it eventually will) things should feel a bit more normal. Try to keep him cool with a breaze thro'the house.

I had IPF and I'm currently struggling with the hot weather conditions, finding it hard to breath and coughing a lot more which makes you really tired. It's really hard to say one way or another as IPF effects everyone of us differently whether it's the recent weather conditions or as you say a flare up of his condition. I have 37 % lung capacity and know how it feels as there are so many different factors to take into consideration with IPF. I know myself by doing everyday tasks, walking and exercising if my condition is getting worse. I then get it confirmed with lung function test results every 6 months or so. I was placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant in January this year. You have got to stay positive and as active as possible. By the way I hate walking up any incline be it a flight of stairs or god forbid a hill.

Ian1369 thanks for your reply. There’s no doubt this weather is bad news for lung conditions. Dad’s got his 6 mo tests in about 3 weeks time anyway so we’ll wait to see what they reveal.

We all struggle with hills! Even those of us without lung problems. Hate ‘em!

Btw Ian1369, I hope you get your call up for a lung transplant. Will think positively for that for you.
