Me again after pneumonia.

Hi folks.

Just wondered if anyone has experienced coughing up blood weeks after having pneumonia. My pneumonia started the end of April so quite a while ago. I coughed a spot up yesterday and two more small amounts this morning. I rang 111 for advice and the Dr I spoke to is happy to let me go until Wednesday when I see the Consultant. When I was in hospital last time they found something at the bottom of my lungs on a CT scan that suggests I could have interstitial disease which is a bit worrying. I was going to wait until I see the Consultant before saying anything. They took a blood test which wasn’t going to come back for two weeks so that was to be discussed at my next appointment. When I spoke to my Dr she had the results but wasnt sure how to read them. She did say it suggested I have asthma very bad. But I haven’t. Can anyone share any light on this coughing up blood. It’s a little bit worrying.

I coughed up blood in the past, I wouldn’t let it wait until Wednesday if it continues..could be infection, irritation, a blood vessel after a bout of coughing, if you feel you are uncomfortable and breathing with difficulty I would call 999.

I pop lung cysts unfortunately and have a risk of pneumothorax.

Hi Fran. It was only a spot yesterday and a couple of times first thing this morning. The bottom of my lungs haven’t felt right since I was ill. I can only explain it as if I breathe deeply it feels irritable and then I can’t breathe as well and start to cough a little. I haven’t got a cough as such. It is worrying and if it happened too much I will call someone. It’s all unknown territory for me. Hope you’re doing ok.

Hi Mavis

I read you dear and it doesn’t seem right..sometimes when it is low down in the lungs it is difficult to cough and expectorate which is why I had to have all this physiotherapy..Like you I was feeling congested. It took me 17 days antibiotics, prednisone, physio and a home nebuliser to start feeling better. I think I am turning the corner and I am going home tomorrow as Mum is on the mend.

You know what I usually say: don’t let it linger. Please do call emergency if you are still coughing blood, the earlier the better as it is the weekend..

Take care of yourself Mavis and let us know how you are getting on.

Love,

Fran xx

Thanks Fran. I’m still taking my prednisolone. I’m down to two a day now and I’m on the last week of them. I finish on Friday. I’m hoping my stomach will right itself then. The steroids aren’t helping. I’m glad your Mum is feeling better. You look after yourself too. I think we’re all fragile at the moment. I promise if it happens too often or gets more I will do something about it. Hopefully it won’t come to that. If nothing else happens I will post again when I’ve been back to the Consultant.

Next time ask for omeprazole 20 or 40 to take 2 hours before your meds if you have stomach problems, it protects the stomach lining. I usually take it during the night around 3 or 4 am when I need to get up. And all my tablets with breakfast after food.

Hope for some good news on Wednesday, thinking of you xx

I take 40 mg of Omeprazole first thing in the morning. I also take a Rinitidine when I go to bed. I take the steroids in the evening too and I always eat something like trifle sponges before taking them. They haven’t got fat in them to upset my stomach. I was told to take them like this. I’ve only got six days of taking two steroids left now so will stick it out for now. It will be difficult to change the routine.

When I spoke to the 111 Dr yesterday he asked me if I’ve ever had a camera down in my lungs. I told him “ No! Thank you! “ (jokingly of course) and immediately dismissed it from my thoughts. Writing this it just brought it back to me. He said that might be next. What are you’re thoughts on this? It sounds a bit harrowing.

Thank you for your kind thoughts for Wednesday.

Dear Mavis,

When you are seen by a lung specialist he will know what to do. No point in worrying in advance.

Nowadays they have highly performing CT scans and Pet scans. They can take sputum tests to see what bacteria it is, they can take specific bio marker tests..

I didn’t need a bronchoscopy to be diagnosed with LAM. A bronchoscopy is used in case of a biopsy. It is invasive so last case scenario..

Thanks Fran. It was a bit worrying when the Dr said that. I don’t want that done unless it’s absolutely necessary. You’ve made me feel better. Xxx

You are welcome.

Being a retired teacher I go to appointments well documented 😃thinking the guy hasn’t got a lifetime on an NHS schedule and he may have had time to read your file but he may not..

-So when it started

-Treatments you have had

-Exactly how you feel now, breathlessness? where it hurts, colour of sputum, presence of blood

- and your expectations 😉

Like: I feel I have been quite unwell for a while, I really rely on you to take the necessary steps to find out what is going on and to give me the appropriate treatment and follow-up.

Good luck my dear Mavis xx

Thanks Marion.

Sorry that you have problems too. It’s a bit worrying the first time you cough up blood. You know you shouldn’t and wonder what’s coming next. I coughed up something this morning but I didn’t get to see what it was as it went down quickly. I haven’t coughed anything up for a while until the last couple of days. I started my pneumonia the beginning of April so not as long as you but a long time. I couldn’t take the nebuliser as it made me too shaky. I’m ok with my ventolin but have known that to make me shaky too. It’s the same reaction that the dentists injection can give you. They always give me one without the adrenaline in. The hospital told me not to have the nebuliser because of my reaction. It’s a bit worrying if I really needed it. I hope you soon get better. It’s miserable to be poorly this time of year. Take care and thank you for replying. Like you I’m new to it too. Keep in touch.

Hi Marion.

Hopefully I won’t need the nebuliser again. I will keep that in mind about the Ipramol. I’ve now had my appointmentment for the Consultant cancelled on Wednesday. They’ve put it forward to Friday. I’ve not coughed up any more blood since Saturday so not too worried. The trouble is Friday is such a busy day it’s going to be awful coming home with the traffic. Never mind, at least I get to do a bit of driving before I go. Because I passed out when I couldn’t breathe they stopped me driving for a month and it’s up on Wednesday. Yippee!!! I’ve hated it without a car. I was going to walk to the chemist yesterday afternoon to get my prescription but it poured with rain. If I could have driven I would have gone anyway. You have a good day too. I will let you know how I get on Friday if they don’t cancel again.

Hello Mavis, I hope you have had no more blood from your cough and decided not to wait till Wednesday. because blood like that should be investigated pronto. Hopefully it is just a small blood vessel bleed from coughing.

The thing is Katie I haven’t got a cough. I just coughed that up yesterday. Something came up this morning but went down too quick to see. My breathing isn’t perfect but I think I’ll be ok until Wednesday. If anything gets any worse I will do something about it. Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I've done this after pneumonia Mavary. Doc said it was just because I was coughing so hard. Best of Luck. 😊🌻✌️
