Hi oh dear not good. Is it the result of your lung disease do you know? Have you been to to the doctor? x

I will go in the morning, thanks for being here. I am COPD and asthma. It is very warm out there. I think I will find a cool spot and put my feet up. x

Putting your feet up sounds like a good idea. Also try putting something cool on them such as a bag of peas but do wrap them in a tea towel or pillow case first to prevent freezer burns. If you have a wheat pillow you can put it into the freezer for a short time as well. x

Thanks hyper, I will do the cold compress. What would we do without our friends out there, when a panic comes on

Hi there ..sorry to hear you are suffering .. I am too! I also have COPD/Asthma and I'm just wondering if like me you are taking steroids at moment. My feet/ankles have been swollen for weeks now (since I came out if hospital for the 3rd time this year) but the doctor keeps assuring me that it's the steroids that cause the swelling. I've had a couple of ECG tests which showed my heart seems okay so I just have to believe her. The hot weather certainly doesn't help. I found some relief yesterday by putting my feet in a bowl of cold water but it made no difference to the swelling. Putting a wheat bag in the freezer sounds a good idea (as per helpful reply from hypercat54). I think I will try that today!

Hi I to put my feet in my foot spa, it did refresh them for a while. Mostly put my feet up when sitting. Also put them up in bed,it all helps. My toes are also swollen and that is uncomfortable. never got slippers on in the house, but then when I go to hang washing out its hard to put them on.

There are many reasons why your feet will swell. Some serious and others not so. Like this hot weather for instance. Don't be frightened. Ring 111 for advice. Let us know how you get along. Best of luck to you.

My legs, feet, ankles swell ...then my tummy...then around my lungs and heart. I am on water pills to release some of the water before it gets around my heart/Lungs! My legs have got so big, they cracked open ,letting the water escape. Eat a lot of watermelon, it will help you get rid of some of that water!! Can you walk or are you out of breathe! Do you have a appetite?

I am very out of breath and I don't want to walk. I am just sitting listening to the garden birds and I know tomorrow will be brilliant

I have swollen tummy, legs, ankles and feet as well. Strangely, my left leg is much worse than my right and has got so bad that I can barely put on my trousers because the leg is too tight. I notice that my lower left leg, ankle and foot is bright red.

Thanks for the watermelon tip. I will try that if I can get someone to get me some.

The GP put me on furosemide but just one pill made both my legs swell up to the extent that I could barely walk and also reduced my urinary output.

I have gained 2 stone in a short space of time.

I've reacted to a lot of diuretics in adverse ways. I eat as little salt as possible to help reduce the amount of fluids I retain during the day.

My ankles and feet have been swelling for few days now. Elevating them helps, as does sitting with my feet in bowl of tepid (not cold) water with Epsom salts added. I'm hoping its just down to hot weather, as I hope yours is, but keeping an eye on them and will speak to GP if they get too uncomfortable. Good tip from Hypercat above - will be using that one when my feet get really hot.

Thank you Dedalus and Hypercat. It will be fine, it is very warm out there. Now, back to my peas on feet!

Hi, poor you. You have my sympathies stamford. Please keep putting your feet up and where the skin is breaking keep the area scrupulously clean, it's open to infection now. Please don't take no for an answer when you call the surgery, it's an emergency appointment you need, not one in two weeks!

I believe the feet need to be a little above hip level when they're up. A pillow under them in bed should help them drain too

Good luck

Feet up! On coffee table, with a pillow. Thank you all for your kindness. They are quite sore. I will report back tomorrow. It's probably just the warm weather

Take a look at Andrew K Fletcher, Inclined Bed Therapy. There are testimonies in this respect.

I'm experiencing the same however after growing up in a hot country have a few tricks. Yesterday my feet & ankles were so bad it was difficult to stand up. I summered them in cold tap water for about an hour sitting in the shade with fresh air. Used cool wet wraps on my wrists & neck . Drank about 2 pints of water during that time. It reduced the swelling I felt better & could walk. Try it. Personally I would avoid frozen as to cool/cold - too much of a shock

A visit to the GP is in order. Cold compresses and foot cream may help. Keep well.

Hi Stamford1234, I had this happen to me recently, it is very painful and frightening. I went to the docs and he sent me for a chest xray to check my heart, I was fine thank goodness. I was retaining water due to the heat. I am still taking the tablets and now my legs and feet are back to normal. So go and see you GP I am sure it is the heat. Take care. Maximonkey

Karenblue profile image

Oh I thought u said u was on water tablets

Maximonkey profile image
Maximonkey in reply to Karenblue

Hi Karen, I take Furosemide normally but the doc has added a further water tablet called Spironolactone. I take them both together with my breakfast and they work very well together. I am so glad this happened really as I have been suffering with water retention on holiday for over 12 months now and I was very worried something else was wrong with me. Take care, Maximonkey

How’s the swelling now I saw my lung consultant today he said it might be my blood pressure tablets but iv took them for yrs is going to write to my gp oh n also up the furosemide

Maximonkey profile image
Maximonkey in reply to Karenblue

Hi Karen, if you doctor says he will up the furosemide, ask him if you can try the Spironolactone, I say this because my GP told me that doubling the Furosemide (which I had done because I was so worried about my feet and legs and it had not worked) does not work as well as taking Furosemide with Spironolactone together. I can tell you he was right. He has given me a spare script in case my legs swell again during this heat wave we are experiencing now. I do hope you feel better soon. Take care, Maximonkey

I too have swollen feet, ankles and lower calfs, only on inhalers, no steroids or big meds.

I have been taking a dandelion concoction from holland and barret, 'dandelion coffee' which helps remove excess water but the swelling remains the same. Had a deep tissue massage on Saturday which helped.

The lower third of my legs have ring indents from tops of shoe, socks and sock elastic, really ache as well and my toes look little xmas 'pigs in blankets (shape not colour) I shall be off to see the quack soon.

best wishes
