Hello from Canada

My question is: I have 26% lung capacity (I quit smoking for several months and I;m so depressed I find myself cheating here and there), I'm done with. My question is my son went to his doctor to see if he could give me a lung doctor said absolutely not, that high risk of rejection. Is there or how do I find out if I'm eligible for a lung transplant? Tomorrow I go for breathing test, I cant walk up and down 13 steps without being winded. I also have a bad habit of holding my breath when I do anything exerting.

I know I did this to myself and there isn't

enough praying I can do to fix this I'm terrified I'm 55 years old and have stage 4 COPD

Hi I am sorry you are stage 4 but the only person who can decide if you are eligible for a lung transplant is your consultant. It is not suitable for everyone so you need to ask him/her if you can be tested for it.

Even if you are unsuitable it is possible you might be able to have lung volume reduction surgery or coils or valves inserted in your lungs. Again the person to ask is your consultant. Good luck with this. x

Perhaps you need a good talk with your lung doctor. Many people on here are at stage 4 and mostly stress that keeping as active as YOU can really helps. Good luck hope you get a referral to a pulmonary physician and the reassurance you need . Are you going to pulmonary rehab?

Give up smoking (easier said than done i know but wort it) ask to do pulmonary rehab yes even as bad as you feel you can do it and talk to your gp about how depressed you are feeling as this is very common amongst us breathy people ask to be referd to a consultant and ask about goingon the transplant list remember its not a quick fix and you have to be reasonably well/fit to be considered good luck i hope you get on top of things soon

Hi. First and furmost you have no other option but to quit smoking for good. Your bad by sounds of it. I take no notice of stage this or that your son. Could but very risky to donate part of his lung to. Both of you. It's done here in the uk but what I've read very risky and high fatally Transplant depends on how long you been ill and bad. You are very complex op. But. It. Seems. You really have to want it to get it. I am trying now. Started. Feb gone I fail on mental ground. Physically very good so they will review my plight this sept. They are very good here. But. Many many people in need. My hospital only do 60 TX a year. I suppose it. Cost. Plus Donons shortage. So. You. Better. Get. A hospital that dose and a DR. That wil. Hopefully give you a lung chop & swap. Hopefully it goes well but. Major op. BW paul

Hello there,

I can only agree with what has already been suggested. Talking to your consultant about your concerns, and your difficulties with stopping smoking. This would certainly be a great achievement and I wish you well.
