There is research showing dementia side effect of some common inhalers such as Spiriva and Spielto Respimat.
The problem seems to be their anticholinergic properties, affecting pathways to the brain, a problem I understand to be also the case with Warfarin.
GPsand physios are still recommending their use but I am seeking specialist opinion. Better breathless than demented in my view if there is a real risk.

I think almost every drug we ingest / inhale has some kind of side effect. Going in with your eyes open and being knowledgeable is definitely important.
I was very concerned about side effects of the drugs I am on too. But unfortunately, I cannot do without them. Without my inhalers , steroids and abs I'd probably not be able to function at all, and being too short of breath will elevate my heart rate to an unhealthy level causing my heart to over work and may lead to cardiac issues and then even more medication. 😔

Hope not Audrey. So far my head is better than the legs, lungs etc. And I've been taking warfarin for over 40 years. I'llkeep inhaling the spiolto and hope for the best. Jane
Along similar lines, I read somewhere that steroid inhalers can increase exacerbations whilst other sources claim to reduce them. Who really knows with these things? Maybe some people are just more susceptible to meds and side effects than others?

When I was prescribed Spiriva by the nurse I too read about the side effects of anticholinergics, dementia being like you my main concern. I went to see the GP because of this concern, he certainly didn't deny it and could only say it was a question of balancing risks and benefits. I wish there was an alternative and will be so interested in whatever you may find out.

Thanks to all who responded with supportive interest. I'm afraid it's a waiting game while researchers come up with more definitive opinions. Personally, I am torn as to whether to drop my Spielto Respimat as it does not seem to be of any help. I also have heart failure and leaky valve problems which are clouding the issue as they too cause breathlessness.
I wish there were a more joined up approach in my area to chest problems in the elderly.
I'll post again if anything helpful comes to light.
