Update

Some of you will remember that a few weeks ago I was at the end of my tether and ready to throw in the towel. I saw a private consultant who told me he could make me feel much better and indeed I am now so much better that I wanted to pass on this update to give others hope.

I am now much more positive and almost feel that I am as good as I can be. OK so I won't be running marathons but I've started a rehab course and am getting advice and help from the physiotherapists. I feel that I am now being listened to and supported. It cost me £150 for the consultation but it was worth every penny. I wish everyone well and hope that they will soon get to feel as well as I do. Best Wishes to all. Take care of yourselves and be proactive in getting the right advice and help. You don't have to suffer, there is help out there but you have to ask for it.

Wonderful to hear such positive news. I must say everyone praises the pulmonary rehab, it sounds as if it really helps people.

This is wonderful news. So happy for you. Shame we have to pay privately for something that should be available through the NHS though.

I agree but it seemed that the NHS was already too overstretched to deal with me.

patty-ann, can you tell us what the consultant did that helped you so much? Certain medications or something? It might help some of us. I have been going to rehab classes at a local hospital but am still feeling quite poorly. Thanks

I think the main thing that he did was LISTEN to me and treat me as a person and not just another case of COPD. He gave me hope, told me he could make me feel better and he contacted my surgery with advice and suggestions that the GP was prepared to impliment. It may be that the fact that I was seeking outside help got me more attention from my surgery. My GP prescribed a different antibiotic which really helped. I began to feel that I was being treated as a nuisance because I was trying to get appointments so often. Nobody seemed to be listening to me. I was expected to medicate myself without the knowledge of which medication was going to help.

I'm glad you're being helped, Patty-Ann. I have a very caring PCP and a pulmonologist who is reputed to be very good. They both assured me that they could help me feel better, but it turns out that has not been true. I like them, but they can't seem to do much for me.

Maybe a second opinion from a prvate consultant is the way to go. My NHS consultant was OK but I felt more like just another COPD case and not a person. He was very dismissive and I got no help or advice from him.
