New to 16 hours a day oxygen

My husband has just returned home from being in hospital for hernia repair it was herendus as the operation was done under local anaesthetic. The up shot of it is he is now on 16 hour a day oxygen. He had oxygen for exercising. He alway been active even running the London marathon along time ago. My question what happens if you have to go on a long journey. He has liquid oxygen but that does not last for very long. He also has the large consentrator . As we are both new to this 16 hour a day oxygen we would so welcome any tips with getting on with you life as it is a bit overwhelming at the moment.

I would speak with your respitory team, 16hrs still leaves 8hrs when Oxygen is not required. You oxygen provider can supply a portable Dewar to fit boot of car. There is also the possibility of a portable concentrator goes to 6lpm on pulse.

A lot will depend on the required LPM and whether you need continuous or pulse delivery.

Your respitory team will be able to advise better and arrange the necessary equipment.

Also consider the use of mobility scooters which may available for hire at your destination.

Hello Hun, Hope your Husband is feeling better after the op. I'm on 16 hours, sometimes more , sometimes Less. Concentrator indoors, mobile for Rehab , any where outside. I will take what Stone has to say as Gospel.. I too will be on a Sedative anaesthetic when I have my Procedure for Valve inserts on the 7thJune. An Interim procedure whilst I'm waiting Lung Transplant whenever that may be. Good Luck to Hubby and Yourself. keep as active as his Lungs allow him too. When I first had to to use oxygen for 16 hours I use to go on it at 4pm until 8 am and found that worked for me leaving me free during the most part of the day. Now I am on oxygen 24/7 I have the concentrator for home use which has been put in so I can switch use from upstairs to downstairs without the need of trailing tubing on the staircase. For going out my oxygen supplier supplies me with DD size canisters of oxygen and I also have a conserver fitted to that so the oxygen is only delivered each time I breath in making the tank last double the time. So a tank will do me well for most outings and if I think maybe not we just stick an extra tank in the car. Hope this helps you. Length of the tank lasting will also depend of course on the flow rate you have been told to use. Mine is only set at 2

I am on 2ltrs per min 16+ a day and have a concentrator for home, a portable concentrator for visiting and there is a power point I can use or using the cigarette lighter thingy in the car, if I am going out for short trips that don't last more than 2 to 3 hours I have some oxygen tanks.

I will admit that I still haven't got used to being attached to tubing and many a time I get yanked to a stand still because I haven't checked that the tubing has become tangled I didn't opt for having it installed because it would not allow me to get to all the rooms on the house (its not a big house) but so far we have had no accidents. I have my oxygen on during the day as my 02 drops with movement.

I think having to organise my oxygen and plan ahead for how much I will need are the things I have been a bit amiss about but I am coming to realise its better to organise than run about like a headless chicken.

It does take some getting use to but you will get there, small steps are best.

Hi I too was put on 16hrs a day & given a small cylinder for outdoors,but found it awkward to use as it kept toppling over so when I mentioned this to respiratory nurse & said I was thinking of buying an Inogen portable & would it be suitable as it has more hours on it,she then said not to buy as they would supply me with the Inogen G2 it’s like a very small case on a trolley,hope this helps you & anybody struggling with the cylinder

P.S can’t remember if it’s 6 hrs or 8
