Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this chat room but so far find it very informing :)

I was diagnosed with bronchiectisis June of 2016. I guess I have it mildly as I have only lost 10% usage of my lung. 2 weeks ago I started coughing real bad - choking - and then a cold came on and fever. No fever now, but still congested in head and lungs. I did z-pac and prednisone and still not better. My question is once you have a bad cough with bronchiectisis do you always have rattling and congestion in your lungs?

Hello Mayzee .

Welcome to the forum. 😀 It's lovely to have you here. 👋

I don't have the same condition as you do, but I will say that any infection does take time to get over for those of us with lung disease. Taking steroids and antibiotics doesn't clear up the wheezing and rattling quickly I'm afraid. 😑 For these matters time is the key word. Be kind to yourself and give yourself ample "healing time".

Sending warm wishes.

Hi Mayzee. I have bronchiectasis too. I have suffered with some very bad coughs and colds and chest infections, and thought that they'd never go away. With the right medication, mine always clear eventually along with the chest rattling.

Hello mayzee I have the same condition whats Iinportant now is to learn how to clear your lungs ask your doctor for a referal to the rehab team who will teach you how to do this failing that there are videos on you tube I also take a probiotic when I have bern taking antiebiotic this helps your emmune system recover after being hammered with seroids I also use a divice called a accapello that helps to clear the stubborn flem and just be kind to yourself and you will be fine hope

I use a flutter device which some can get on the NHS, similar I think to the Acapella. One of the rehab clearing strategies used by bronchs is called the Active Cycle of Breathing (ACB). If you put this into youtube search, you will find vids which show you how to do it. Sometimes getting referred can take a while so Id advise you to take a look and gently start doing it yourself - be patient and keep going til you get the hang of it - it does work!

Mayzee fillowj g every chest infection I get and that needs antibiotics I am left with a really deep rooted chesty cough. We now know I need a different set today antibiotics to clear that nasty last bit that gets right in there. Take probiotics too as has been suggested already and get to know the breathing exercises to help use and clear your lungs. My best advice stay calm and move, move, move

I've had Bronchiectasis for about 10 years. Clearing the mucus is the most important thing. A chest physio will help you. Bronch is not a disease, it is a condition - which means it's manageable. Not sure why you have steroids. Have you actually seen a chest specialist? The average GP is not so well informed about Bronch as, for instance, COPD. They are quite different. My specialist took me off the inhaler which contained steroids as he thought it was not helping my pseudomonas (which is colonised - something else which is quite common in Bronchs). You are new to this so will pick up a lot along the way but there are very helpful fellow sufferers on this site. I had a cold about a month ago and, apart from copious mucus and continually dribbling nose, it cleared in about a week. A probiotic while taking antibiotics is essential. I take Bio-Kult. Would be interested in what others take. Good luck.

Good info - thanks. This is the first time after a cold that I am left with a real heavy chest cough! Yes, I see a pulmonologist. Guess I need to get with him as this chest cough isn't clearing up.
