This story really explains alot re my personal experience WITH my dad and also my lung clinic putting me out to pasture.

I know even tho he's referring to those doctors who refuse to treat those with dementia alzheimer's with respect care they deserve.

Is shocking story read AND could be any onr of us what as anyone with dementia alzheimer's done to deserve such shocking treatment.
Like i experienced with doctor and her apparent hand of god AND how my maintenance antibiotics WAS stopped then duly discharged after change of DX then left to suffer respority distress.
Think IS us ... and things like this can't carry on.
This too much healthcare ageism cockups coincadece going on LEFT unchecked NOT to worry about our mortality AT hands of those that apost to care and not judge or discriminate.

A proper diagnosis of my previous husband's dementia caused by his lack of oxygen and heart failure in COPD would have made my life and his so much easier in the last stages of his life and illness.

While the article is from January 2013, you are right that the same or similar is happening today. Ageism definitely exists. I experienced that with my Dad who died a year ago. Those with Alzheimer's are also not always given the help they need. My mother, who had severe Alzheimer's, recently died and I am glad that she didn't feel the full pain of the "suspected" breast cancer that they refused to take out when it was tiny. From what I understand when it gets to the bone, it is very painful. Luckily she passed away before this stage. I never really understood why it was "kinder" to not operate on something tiny and let it get "ugly" which is what eventually happened. We grew used to the fact over the years that even antibiotics was considered too invasive by some doctors. Luckily we had good doctors.
When Mum had a compacted bowel a couple a years ago, they refused to do a test to show whether it was compacted or twisted. We took her home and luckily it was only compacted which was soon fixed.
In areas of the world where there is severe malnutrition and not enough food for everyone, I have heard of doctors and nurses having to decide who gets or doesn't get food. I thought what a heart-breaking job. Unfortunately, I feel some doctors here are also making those decisions but without the given right to do so and with more arrogance than heart.

That's an interesting point, Aliens2. We paid tax on our earnings, and tax on our savings which we made by saving our earnings, and then tax on the health care we pay for. So we are taxed three times. And these are not small taxes.
Tax on savings includes tax on dividends if you invest in shares, tax on interest over a certain amount, and possible stamp duty/capital gains tax/inheritance tax if you invest in property, or tax on income if you rent out property. Tax on health care includes paying VAT on bills if your provider is a business, not a local authority or charitable organisation. Your payment to a caring organisation contributes to the tax and national insurance of the people working for that organisation. And make sure you ask for exemption for disability supplies or you will pay VAT on those too.
Hi Jeff, this article is devastating news, at a time when many of us are fighting for better care for mental health patients. Dementia is another area where it appears to me that the system is failing patients. Surely all mental health patients are entitled to treatment in the same way as physical illness?, however both areas are suffering from lack of tests to reach a correct diagnosis and if the patient is not aware then that continues as an accepted practice, poor though in my opinion. A very immotive subject as people who have been through it will tell you, it causing even more emotional suffering than the actual illness. Have a good bank holiday bothx
