Spirometry

Well just had Spiro done again today😥 and a little shocking.

3rd December 2015 were the previous ones

FVC 89.5% of predicted

FEV1 83.8% of predicted

FEV1 % VC Max 90.5% of predicted

Today the titles are different so trying to work it out but I think they are

FVC 71% of predicted

FEV1 73% of predicted

FEV1/FVC 77.7%

So if I am reading this right I am down about 13% on my FEV1/FVC really did not think it was that bad.

Still my doctor had not seen the original ones and said considering I smoked for so long the resulrs were not bad. Mind you the report said "due to low respiratory effort obstruction may be masked"

There are some strange number for predicted but I will see if I can find a document to let me understand them a bit more. They also added 2inches to my height as well so that may make a difference 🤣

Oh well I think I will try again in a few weeks after I get rid of the cough and continual mucus production causing it😊.

Thanks for that - really don't feel so bad at the moment but I think I need to get out of the dusty atmosphere so change of job may have come at the best time

Hello Andy, no it's not good is it, but as usual you just get on with it, good for you. I admire your strength of mind. I do hope things improve for you Andy, take care ✋️😊

Thanks for the reply.

In the end we all just have to live with what we have been given and we all manage to just get on with things. I think I posted a while ago that the people on this forum have shown me I am not alone in this and the people who are worse off than me manage to be strong and cope so I have no excuse not to do the same🤞

Best of luck mate!

There can be variations depending on how much effort you put in, what time of day it is, etc. but it is important that the height is recorded correctly.

"By that score", I can only say that you cannot compare the two sets of results, one set has to be wrong, because of the height difference. Your first job is to check your own height to find out which one is right, then compare that one with the next one you do.

Getting out of that dust is a real smart move, believe me I know what it is like, It was not doing you any favours at all.

I'm sure the height difference will make a big difference to the results! Maybe ask them to put your correct height in and recalculate if that's at all possible ?

The height difference will make a huge difference because the expected values for all parameters will be much higher on the second test. I notice the first set of results were normal and the second set show a slightly restrictive pattern rather than obstructive. If the last set of results are correct (ie using your correct height), I would have requested a chest xray to check all is OK with your lungs. If you have a BMI of 34 or above, this can also be the cause of restriction but you appear to be slim from your photo. If you have had a recent xray, I wouldn't worry as these 2 sets of results cannot be compared.

Yes thinking about it the latest results are suspect. Now that I have had time to relax a little I can see that maybe it needs to be recalculated as I know I am 72 inches tall not 74 inches. The Scan i had recently shows some emphysema and some fibrosis and along with the bronchitis the switch from obstructive to restrictive is something i need to look into.

Oh and my bmi, funnily enough, was about spot on at 25.4 so I think they got my weight wrong as well🤣

Will be seeing the doctor again in the next few days and so I will discus and see what she suggests. Or I might just do the recalculation myself.

Thanks for all your kind words and support

Andrew

There are so many variables to the test I would not worry. My own as gone up and down by 15%. I am of the opinion that spirometry is a poor indication of functional capacity. The day after my worst blow I had my best 6 minute walk test result.

Thanks for those words of encouragement. I was shocked at the dramatic change given that I really feel no difference so did not notice the errors in the base predicted data calculations.

As they have the detail of the predicted source I have just done a recalculation of the FVC and FEV1 numbers and as others have said this gives a difference of 5% for both so perhaps not so bad but the FEV1/FVC doesn't change apart from being reversed to my original spiro🤔

Just wondering how it can go from obstructive to restrictive🤔

Fibrosis can cause restriction. Have you had a CT scan which is more accurate than an xray for showing up abnormalities. I would never diagnose copd based on a chest xray!

Had numerous CT and yes I have some fibrosis but not enough to cause the change from obstructive to restrictive😉. Always previous diagnosis has said obstructive - will be speaking with doc about it next week
