Favourite Idioms.

Reading the Oxford Dictionary of Idioms, as one does, I was pleased to see a particular favourite of mine included; 'All fur coat and no knickers'. The description says "have an impressive or sophisticated appearance which belies the fact that there is nothing to substantiate it." I wrote this little rhyme a while back that went something like this:

"She's fur coat and no knickers"

We had heard our mothers say.

My mates and I looked out for them

When we went out to play.

We followed fur coated ladies,

Until they were ill at ease.

Young Harry said, "Just ask'em"

"They'll tell if you say please."

But no one had the courage,

To risk getting a clout.

So in the end we all gave up

And never did find out.
