My hospital not like what you expect? !

Now I am a patient of my local super hospital built 4 years ago. It's life Jim but not as we know it. Aka Startrek... Main building has sculpture outside the threemmonkeys and a lion with a injured paw. Two Costa Coffees, grand piano and art work to buy on the wall. This snapped by me on my way to an appointment. Appointment letters with bar code to scan near entrance inside where you get your information scan b and registered for appointment then directed to gate for your appointment. Built on the principal of people recommend their gate at airports. Simple but effective.

Doesn't distract from the amazing staff working there. Seen A&E too many times this last week ×3. Much better now and the painting a snip at £350. Anyone interested? Lastly what hospital is it? Answers on a postcard?!

Didn't have to research it though! It has become very familiar in the last two years.

Congrulations folks your right it is Southmead. A five minute drive from my house or 5 mins in a ambulance. I wasn't attending the hot clinic just respiratory which is gate 12.

Having a place like this to go to certainly can be interesting when you need it. My favourite thing is people watching or just finding someone to talk to.

One more little thing which I only used once is the golf cart. This carrys people from one end of the building to another. Took it when I needed the hot clinic.

Anyone got an usual feature or thing they like about their hospital. This place is like a busierling town. Back tomorrow for not respiratory and this time the farmers market will be there. I wonder what the Victoria thought of this place?!

I have been to the hot clinic once, also had a couple of emergency visits to my cardiologist. I have an urgent respiratory appointment coming up. I now go to the adult congenital heart disease clinic at BRI. Both excellent hospitals even though the BRI is somewhat older. They're only twenty minutes away, but everyone thinks it's miles because we have to go OVER THE BRIDGE. It'll be nearer when the tolls come off next year!

So you and I share the same hospital. Confess to using the golf cart once to the respiratory hot clinic. Hope and pray your appointment goes well tomorrow. I had Dr Dave Smith a friendly but professional too. Waiting to see him again in ordinary clinic soon I hope.

If you fancy a drink go to the league of friends coffee shop at the top end of the hospital.

They were going to do PFTs tomorrow but we are away at the moment in no longer snowy North Devon but there will be news when I get home on Sunday I hope. Last time I saw my consultant he said two things to me, that my condition was incurable and to call him if I get worse. I, my gp and the respiratory nurse all agree I have got worse. I am expecting to discuss having a biopsy if he confirms I have got worse. Meanwhile we just have to keep trundling on don't we.

I have been to the League of Friends cafe several times, also Costa's. If I must have these hospital visits at least Southmead is a good place to go. I have a Welsh gp although I live in England, so the bureaucracy can get a bit complicated, but my gp is very helpful. All the best xx

I like the health idea of a fruit market outside the main door of our local hospital, must be cold in this weather though, both for fruit and staff. :)

My local hospital (five minutes by train) has a big fruit and vegetable stall outside every day, also a golf cart from the car park to the entrance if you need it. It has a big Costas and a couple of Costa carts, a different restaurant and a WH Smith’s. It has the bar code scanners to register, but also actual people if the scanner doesn’t work. The building has interesting curves in its buildings. Is this anyone elses hospital?

We are about three miles away. I visit the lung, rheumatology, podiatry an endocrinology departments and my husband the eye department. My only complaint is about the car park. It’s very difficult to park if you have an afternoon outpatient’s appointment, and it’s expensive - £4.30 for 75 minutes yesterday!

I know the parking can be bad. I had an outpatient appointment every week for the last 5 weeks. I park nearby and walk. Would love to walk there but time constraints stop it at the moment.

So lots of visits for all above but the decor makes it less oneous. Back next Wednesday and will be going to bless others.
