Hi Carol

My EnT told me the best ones are Augmentin or Clarithromycin, the latter is good if you have probs with penicillin. Augmentin can really upset the tummy. I couldn't handle it and it made my blood test go strange but went back to normal within weeks.

We are all different and some can tolerate it very well, so I would speak to your GP about them. Also a nasal spray called Dymista is useful and that has an antibiotic in it so might be useful.

Also I know you get this bad so a week probably won't be enough you may need a longer course 2 weeks at least I'd suggest.

Thanks shanock I think I’ve been carrying this infection a long time when I came out of hospital I felt a hell of a lot better but still felt stuffed up with like a bad cold and within days I was going down hill again I don’t think they had completely got rid of it that’s how it’s been since the onset of winter 2 weeks antibiotics then a week or two feeling bit better then back on abs ...,, round and round vicious circle my immune system must be zero, thanks shanock xx

hi carol you describe how I was about 18 months ago I tried on advice from people on this site Vicks First Defence nasal spray which cleared up my sinus problems and acts to stop viruses developing as they do in the back of the nasal cavity. I still use it daily (not recommended) Last year my infection rate went down to once every 3 months being previously as yours although this winter has been about every 6 weeks hopefully will improve when the weather does. Anyway maybe worth a try can't do any harm good luck xxx

hope it works but should have just said I did not get a lot of mucus just a feeling of blocked sinuses and always even after clearing an infection a feeling that my right nostril was always blocked deep in the back (which is where viruses proliferate). anyway that said good luck let us know how you get on xxx

bit more history - I too thought it must be my sinuses but knew something was wrong - tried all the sinus things liquid up nostril etc. nothing worked mentioned to Doctor not interested. So when saw post on here re recommend the Vicks FD thought worth a try and it worked. At the same time started a Future Learn (free online course very good all sorts of subjects) on Influenza - and found that the flu bug proliferates in the back of the nasal cavity so all made sense. Had also previously finally got enough phlegm for a test when had an infection and found it had been a flu virus not a bacterial infection - so the antibiotics had not been useful or necessary so cutting the viral infections also cut down on antibiotic use so a double whammy one reason I still use the Vick FD every day do not want to risk any flu viruses getting a hold although as I say that is not recommended. Good luck.

To be honest I can't remember but think it took a little while to get used too make sure you follow instructions, think now and then it seemed raw on my throat and nose but just used common sense and lessened the dose - can only say if a lot coming out that would seem good as would appear to be clearing the well in the nasal cavity where the virus lives bear with it if you can - there probably is a lot to come out will be worth it in the end - good luck let me know xxx

Thanks undine I will xx

A relative plagued with sinus infections, who is is also a nurse, says Augmentin is the best antibiotic. As Shancock says though, some people can't tolerate it.
