Hi can you tell me what a salt pipe is and how it’s used? Thanks. I have bronchiectasis. Diagnosed 1973.

Bella124 profile image
Bella124 in reply to Waterfall1950

Hi waterfall. If you go on the internet there's a ton of info about salt Pipes I've just ordered one it's just a container with a spout on it you but salt crystals in the bottom and through a filter you then inhale with your mouth

Best of luck

Yes I’d also like more information about salt treatments. I bought my son a Saline air filter for his bedroom but then I read in The Guardian that salt treatments are not researched yet and that there’s a risk they could aggravate the airways....

Hacienda profile image
Hacienda in reply to Chimai

So does the air we breathe, if we took notice of everything we shouldn't have, then what a boring life, Give it a go, can't harm you, I swear by mine. Xxx

I use salt in a different form. For my bronchiectasis, my doctor prescribed a PARI Nebulizer with a saline solution (4 ml of hypertonic saline solution 7%). I started last August. I inhale it for 20 minutes, twice a day. It loosens up the mucous, and I cough up a lot of awful-looking stuff. I also use "the Vest" to oscillate my chest wall, but I never felt any changes from it (I've used it for years but still got sick a lot). Anyway, the saline works great! The previous year, I had four exacerbations in which a simple cold virus turned into a prolonged lay-in-bed fever and then taking Levofloxacin, which has scary side effects. This year, my first year on saline, I have had no fevers or flare-ups. I live in the US and have a good pulmonologist at a university hospital. There is also a clinical study for patients with PCD, and one of the drugs they're testing is some sort of salt medication.

Bella124 in reply to branch9

Hi branch that is interesting. The salt pipe I bought online has Himalayan salt crystals but what I've read you can use different types of salt ( not table salt you use for your Fry's hahaha). Can you tell me what PCD stands for is it the same has COPD

Thanks

Hi Bella124,

I have used one for a number of years now and I think the salt does some good. I hear that salt near the seaside working in salt mines or near salt flats are good for the chest.

It's a salt pipe not a gun confused

john-cv profile image

Sorry for any confusion, new salt shaken in transit has salt dust. I normally do not suck with gusto on the first few draws. After some use I gently shake the pipe to cause some dust.
