Hi

VAT exemption is given at time of purchase.

The company as to be registered for VAT, plus registered for approved equipment.

You would normal make a declaration at the time of purchase of your eligibility.

Hi

Afraid not.

You can get VAT relief on a new car if it has been adapted or fitted with adaptions for your personal use.

But not on spares and repairs

Definitely NOT.

HM Revenue and Customs says:

"Goods that are designed for use by disabled and non-disabled people alike can't be bought

VAT free. Goods that are bought to be used by or that are mainly bought by disabled people

can't be bought without VAT unless they're designed solely for use by disabled people. For

example, general purpose equipment such as a laptop, an air conditioning device, a reclining

chair or an orthopaedic bed might benefit a disabled person but can't be bought VAT free

because they're not designed solely for use by a disabled person.

"

The car is taxed as disabled.

Hi

Road tax exemption is different from VAT exemption.

I bought my electric reclining chair VAT free, also some of the items for our new bathroom. The easiest way is to ask the retailer, but as Stone points out, it is only for those items which are specifically useful to a disabled person, not things for everyday life so to speak. As I say, ask, and if they don't know their company policy ask them to find out. But not tyres I'm afraid!

Start here:

gov.uk/financial-help-disab...

.... but be aware that many goods and services do NOT qualify for VAT relief.

Quite a few online retailers, such as Betterlife and Angel Mobility, quote VAT-free prices for eligible items. You just need to declare eligibility. Amazon.co.uk will refund VAT on eligible items if you make an application.

Do you have anything specific in mind?

All I know is that we bought a bed, nothing fancy, and successfully claimed back VAT plus our new bathrooms.

You can only ask. Give it a go. Xxx

We got the VAT off our bathroom when we changed the bath for a walk-in shower. Also got VAT of a three wheeled walker. The forms were presented by the retailers in both cases and I just filled them in. Have never heard of getting VAT off tyres, though. xx Moy

When I bought my bed , stair lift, shower and chair I signed an exemption certificate for VAT, please remember even illnesses like COPD are classed as a disability, generally it is up to you the person with the disability to prove their disability rights and disability exemption is only on goods needed in connection with your disability. Not all goods are exempt on the grounds of disability. It is a very grey area. But always ask you may be able to claim it back once it is paid in some circumstances. My bathroom needs adapted taps and walk in shower due to arthritis so I am exempt from VAT on those items the certificate allows the vender to be excused from paying VAT not actually you.
