New Year Greetings

Happy New Year to everyone, thought it was easier to send one greeting to all as I talk to many on here. Was reflecting on how we used to do it in the old days, from door to door first footing, to phoning, to texting and now facebook, twitter , and forums.Oh how we have moved forward. Was thinking myself about the way we communicate in this modern day and age......I used to be hoarse from greeting everyone, now I've wished so many people greetings and not uttered a single word......sad in its way ...modern yes ....but there's a lot missing from the personal touch and friendly greetings. Xxxx

Hi Pegbi, I prefer the personal touch myself, nobody seems to have time these days and being honest some of these digital gadgets are more complex than a simple phone call, but I am always told they are the future of our younger generation. They will all be yes men cause the computer says so know what I mean . xx

Happy New Year to you Katie......I went to bed early, then the fireworks woke me up and my neighbour texted me as she saw my light on.

My late father had to first foot as he was tall and dark, carrying a lump of coal. In Wales at one time women were not allowed out before noon on New Years Day.....my grandmother was told off when she was seen fetching coal to put on the range to boil a kettle . She gave as good as she got back though.

My late mother remembered groups of men going round door to door carrying a dressed up horses skull....the Mari Lwyd .

When we lived in Scotland the tradition there was to thoroughly clean the house on New Years Eve.....I did attempt it yesterday .

Well Knitter, I tried the cleaning house one but as I live alone I thought why am I doing this!!! Today I have done a few jobs including painting the bathroom door, but the paint tin fell on the floor so now I need to buy a new bath mat for the floor. Looks like its about to be another crazy year :). Took two hours to clean up the paint. Thanks for your reply.

My Dad had a photograph of the men carrying the Mari Lwyd - I think that is grey mare - have hunted everywhere for it but no success yet. It looked very strange but a good black and white pic. and I know Dad treasured it so I'll keep on searching and post if I find it.

Thanks Katie, thank goodness for those improvements, though it's sad we lack face to face contact these days. Without things like phones and this website, though, I'd be feeling very different at this time of year! Thanks for all the kind messages and I wish you a healthy happy 2018 too.x
