Sinus issues

Since my illness last spring and consequent diagnosis of asthma( I’m suspicious about that) I have constant sinus issues.

I am very congested at night and despite using Alba’s oil and vapour rub I wake with a dry mouth, sore sinus, ears etc.

I have also completely lost my sense of smell!!! This makes life quite tricky.

I wonder if anyone has any clues as to what may help!

I seem to be super sensitive to irritants although unsure what this maybe! At times I sneeze and stream .....

Hope you’re all okish. Festive greetings to everyone

My symptoms were quite similar and included horrific 10 day headaches. Was treated for migraine for several years. Turned out it wasn't that, it was totally full sinus cavities and nasal polyps. Had a little op in 2006, take steroid nasal spray nightly and hardly had a headache since. As for loss of smell, it's very annoying - always ensure smoke alarms work! I have allergic rhinitis. I know which foods trigger it so avoid them. Hope this helps. P

I seem to have developed allergic rhinitis but it seems random! Not sure what triggers it. Thankyou

Hello Leesea .

That sounds so very uncomfortable. And needless to say your sleep must be broken. I am wondering if you've had a thorough check up by an otorhinolaryngologist? If so what were their findings?

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome. One of the hallmarks of Sjögren’s is a very dry mouth, nose and eyes. More prevalent at night. I am not of course suggesting you have this but I wonder if you've been tested for any autoimmune diseases.

To help myself get through the night as well as I can I use a humidifier in winter. I also try to avoid taking antihistamines that will dry me out more. Steamy baths may help the dry nose but make it hard to breathe. Steam seems to bother my lungs. I know there are drugs that help dry mouth but I don't use them. I also don't drink alcohol and have cut down significantly on my caffeine intake. I drink plenty of caffeine free peppermint or chamomile tea, and water.

I hope you find some relief soon. Take good care.

I suffer with that at night bad and can hardly breath though my nose where blocked, not all the time but when i do, i get it for about a week.

I have try steam.. vicks vaper and other things all no good to me, and then i got a nasal spray from tesco called OTRIVINE and that worked wonders for me within minutes.

I sometimes wonder if sinusis is to do with this copd

Yes, I have problems with my sinuses too. Lying down makes it worse.

Ask to see a specialist and have an allergy test and get them to look up there with camera to see about inflammation, there are minor ops that can be done to ease it.

Do not use decongestant sprays they'll make it worse.

Steam and drinking lots of hot water and camomile tea. While waiting to see specialist ask GP for a steroid spray for before bed and try Neilmed nasal rinse on a daily basis to flush you sinuses out, it really helps. Also Sterimar which is saline helps you can use it a few times a day it's natural so is very safe.

As I said to music, it is all connected, nose, throat, lungs. A good ENT referral and check-up is in order. Apart from regular nasal seawater wash and steroids spray, draining sinus technique is useful..

You must try STERIMAR saline spray!! This is a VERY dilute solution of salt in pure water in a pressurised canister. It is completely harmless and extremely effective at treating sinus blockages. It has no side effects. Available from any chemist over the counter. I use it regularly and no longer have problems.

DO NOT USE OTRIVINE.

Will try it.
