Cold weather

Hi again all. I’ve got bronch and emphysema and it seems like I’m almost having an exacerbation since the properly cold weather has set in. Don’t think it’s a full on infection so does anyone find that the cold weather just makes things worse?

Hi Pete

Definitely so is changing temperature from cold outside to warm inside etc..

More cold viruses in winter as well.. so don’t let that exacerbation set in..you don’t want it to turn into a full infection, phone the GP and get it checked or phone the helpline first for advice first if you wish..

Take good care and plenty of hot drinks x

It's established now that while cold doesnt itself cause sickness, it will lower the immune system so it will be less efficient in fighting bugs off. Ive been told not to go outdoors (unless just house to car obvs) when it's 6 degrees or below. I can hardly walk when it's that cold anyway.

Hello COPDPete .

Yes, cold weather definitely makes things a bit more challenging. Low humidity seems to help the flu virus survive so we tend to get sick more too. I get a bit sluggish and have to make sure I get out and exercise when the sun is out in the afternoon. I am lucky that my region is mostly sunny in winter. I know that is harder to do in the U.K.

Hang in there. We will get through this. 😃

I've not been going out when its been cold, even missed 2 weeks of my singing for breathing group as I had a sight cold and didn't want to infect the others. I had to take my wife to the hairdressers though as she has broke her wrist a few weeks ago and cant drive. Sat in the car with the heater on as it was only 2 degrees outside,

Oh absolutely Joyce, it's reassuring to know there is backup and you can relax. ✋️😊

The winter months sit on my chest like an Inuit fishing through a tiny hole in the ice. I have always loathed the British weather.

Hi mate. The cold certainly affects your breathing. Remember to breath in through your nose and out through pursed lips. You nose has the facility to air condition your breath due to the high number of blood vessels up your snot box. Also the hairs up your snitch help filter out bugs and other irritants.....except for kids, gobby teenagers etc. I also have a Snood from Halfords. It's a cyclist thingy designed to help breathing and filter out diesel and petrol fumes.

Hi COPDPete yes I know exactly what you are going through, I came out of hospital due to exacerbation brought on by infection. The hospital always tell me to keep warm but I feel better when I have my fan blowing in my face. Being too warm I feel is worse.
