Yes interesting. Through all the info that appears to come down on the side of my consultants who do not like these drugs for non cf bronch ( and that is an opinion expressed over thirty years). We have to remember that cf secretions are of different composition and very much more sticky than those of non cf bronch. I’m not commenting on COPD. I took part in a drug trial for nebulised DNAse which was meant to thin mucus by breaking up its DNA. We were the control for the cf s. It was eventually adopted for cf but many of the non cf s on the trial were very ill and had haemorrhages. Two died. I was lucky, I was on saline. We do have to be very careful. Oh my..you never know with those trials, that was a close call..It is very popular here and OTC..
One thing I have to say about these articles is that they are short, to the point and not cluttered with over technical language or Mumbo Jumbo.
And this one does perhaps explain why, despite my resolute praising of NaC ..... , my consultant, equally resolutely refuses to prescribe it for me.

I think, as the article points out, that they have extremely mixed results on different conditions.
Yes then I was told you shouldn’t have it with asthma..anyway thought it helped at the time..

I’m taking mucolytics for bronchitis and have been taking it now for about 2 and half years could you tell me why you now don’t take it now x
I have found Carbocisteine to be really helpful. Just goes to show, we are all different
I know that Carbo doesn't work for every one. It didn't work for me with a heavy infection, but it does day to day helps shift mucous movement by motility rather than by coughing & huffing.
So I take it when it is good for me. Fortuneately my GP doesn't argue and it was the consultants suggestion - along with 'it doesn't work for everyone'.
The problem with that report is it's focusing on preventing exacerbations - what about patient comfort? ie it's cost driven rather than patient well being centred.
Sure if it gives you comfort..
I have been taking between 3 and 6 carbocysteine very day for the last 2 years and this article may explain why I have never been sure if the medication works or not. Thank you for the info.
