Consider silent reflux

Hi all, have bronchial asthma and bronchiectasis. Six months ago, I would cough (productively) for up to an hour after going to bed. I would often feel inflammation (still do) which would immediately become infected.

Last May, I had a procedure for silent reflux. (a ‘Linx’ device). Now - cough is dramatically reduced - no longer cough in bed, and my inflammation stays just that - no infections.

Consider silent reflux if you have similar symptoms.

Good advice. Lots of us have reflux and I have been surprised at just what it can cause.

Interesting. I’ve just been given access to my online GP record and see that I have been diagnosed (unbeknown to me) with LPR which I think is Silent Reflux. They keep prescribing omeprazole but, as I understand it, this doesn’t help LPR?

Maybe better if you start a your own thread for focussed replies.

Yes I have reflux. I am seeing consultant in about 3 weeks to talk about having Linx surgery. Can I ask what tests did you have to undergo prior to the surgery? I have already had CT scan whatcha shows hole on the oseopheagos. Just wondering what else they'll want to test.

How was the recovery time after the surgery? Has it dramatically helped with back pain? I get constant pain in between my shoulders, I take Omeprazole and rennin at present to ease it a little.

Good to know someone else has had it, I'm hoping I can too as I hear it's good.

I have had reflux for a very long time. I used to have terrible mornings of coughing and bringing a horrible bile up along with the usual gunk. I took a bottle of medicine and continued with the omprazomle and it still has the odd flair but not so bad at the moment.

Interesting read when I first saw it I thought it was a Pandora advert? ;)

BE Well

Wow you may help save my life is this available in the uk ? Xx

Hi carol, the only person I know in the UK who's due to have this is Shancock , she mentioned it on my thread about reflux. Maybe you could pm her? She's kindly promised to let us know how she gets on. I think the number of hospitals offering it on the NHS is quite limited. I must say I presumed your consultant would have already considered this for you.

Ed: I've just noticed Shancock's reply, above!

Hi hanne, I’ve made an appointment this morning with upper gi consultant to discuss my options, I’ve got another chest infection coming on that’s 3 in under 3 months due to the pesky reflux, well that’s my opinion I know il get some mucus from my bronchiectasis but according to chest consultant not that much ?.. all I know is I can’t continue as I am spending hours with my head down the toilet it’s soul destroying, once or twice a day but not 4/5 hours il let you know how it goes xx

I was looking at waldorff’s link yesterday, it does look like a solution for you. Your guy is bound to know about it & if he doesn’t yet do it himself, he can refer to someone who does. I think I read the Royal Exeter were the first to do it on NHS, but lots now involved, I found this link which shows where toraxmedical.co.uk/find-a-c... Each consultant has to make a case for the individual patient, but as you don’t have an alternative that shouldn’t be a problem. Carol, I do hope the appointment is fruitful, as your quality of life is so badly affected. Really spell this out to your gi con! Roll on 2018 eh, I’m rooting for you x

I'll try to answer all questions in one post. I can't say much about the Linx device - I think there's a lot written about it elsewhere. I don't know whether it's available in the UK (I'm in California), but there are other ways, surgical or not, to control reflux.

I have bronchial asthma - that is, I'm sensitive to cold, dry and dirty air. All these make me cough up stuff. Now I have bronchiectasis.

I was on Omeprazole - a PPI - it helped a lot. Was tested for reflux (Barium swallow, esophageal pH probe, endoscopy) and had a Linx device fitted, and it helped a lot more. It's not good to take PPI's long term, and they control stomach acid but not bile.

I still have trouble swallowing sometimes, but the recovery was quick. All in all, a really good thing. I no longer get stomach 'stuff' in my lungs, and that was the source of the e-coli infections, so I no longer get those. My cough at night was reflux - silent, because I never knew I had it. I still get bouts of inflammation, so prednisone is still my best friend.

I hope that helps! My experience may not be your experience of course, but I wish you all well this holiday season.
