Anyone take Ranitidine?

Shancock profile image

Whilst I wait to see a GERD specialist (he has to postpone all appointments as he had an accident), I'm taking Omeprazole which is helping but still get lots of horrid symptoms. My other consultant said that Ranitidine might work better, so I'm considering it.

Anyone take this one for GERD? Does it help, any side effects?

I keep feeling nauseous before I eat and after I eat. Also horrid taste in my mouth constantly and loads of saliva. Coughed up big ball of gunk is morning.

Hi Shancock,

I am on Esomeprazole (Nexium) that I take night & mornings and I also take Ranitidine before going to bed, they seem to have been helping reduce the reflux symptoms. I have not had any side effects from either, I was on omeprazole for quite a long time and it did not seem to be helping, but things improved since I have been on Esomeprazole.

I also take Carbocisteine to which helps thin down the mucus and makes it easier to get rid of.

Ranitidine is generic for Zantac. I started taking Zantac twice a day in order to clear up GERD, and stop having hoarseness. I think it's helped me. I bought some Zantac over the counter before I found out about ranitidine, and the ranitidine is a lot cheaper and it helps a lot. Still hoarse, but I think it's going away but slowly.

I may give it a try then, I’ll see what the ENT prescribes today..

Yep. Not all the time though. It's great for me. One tiny tablet lasts 12 hours (again, for me). The brand name is Zantac but can be bought off supermarket shelves, usually called 'Indigestion Tablets'. Half the price of Zantac, check the ingredient on the package. I recall 20 years ago when I was prescribed them by GP. She said to take them sparingly as they were £1 each!

In the UK we get free medication if we are on disability xx

I take Ranitidine, 2 x 150mg tabs per day, and also 40mg Nexium. Lately though my reflux has dramatically broken through despite everything. My consultants keep telling me it's essential to suppress excess stomach acid, as research shows it to be highly damaging to the lungs.

Yes, that's why I'm seeing a consultant who specialises in Linx surgery, I have terrible bronc problems related to this. Hopefully I'll have the surgery and that'll do it's for good. It's very successful I hear

in reply to Shancock

Oh yes, I'd forgotten that was you. I just hope you don't have to wait too long. You can be our guinea pig for the Linx procedure :)

Yes hopefully in New year, I was due to see the chap last week but he's had an accident so will be off for few weeks so I'll see him after Xmas. I could opt for someone else but he's really good, my respiratory cons recommended him, he's at the Lister (I go private as it comes with my husbands job, thank goodness or I'd be waiting till next Xmas I think)!

He'll need to do some tests first, can't remember what they're called but they'll cover everything. He's done lots of these procedures and his success rate apparently is 100%, national average is 95 apparently. So I'm hopeful. Also going to see an ENT guy in Harley Street to start sorting out my chronic sinus that has been causing me problems for 20 years! Hoping next year will be a turning point and I will start feeling better and not b plagued with frequent bronchitis everytime I land a cold!

Wish I'd done this years ago!

I wouldnt switch but add in ranitidine - many people need it at night to treat night time reflux that omeprazaole like drugs do not treat very well. No side effects with ranitidine for me.

Also check out comments regarding how to take omeprazole - best if 1 hr before food. Some people also need higher doses or sustained release or twice daily omeprazole

I took ranitidine for 35 years and had no problems with it at all until it stopped working a couple of years ago. Now I'm on omeprazole which is doing the job just fine.

Hi Shancock. My husband John suffered from acid reflux most of his life. The hospital has now put him on esomeprazol 40 mg twice a day and Ranitidine before bed, since taking these for the last year he has had no reflux problems. However unfortunately the earlier acid reflux has damaged his lungs and he has been diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis

hello, I was just searching for posts on AR (acid reflux), I'm currently taking ranitidine 150mg x2 a day but i'm finding that my AR is no longer being helped by it. It has worked for a few years. But now it's stopped, so I'm waiting for an endoscopy because i haven't had it investigated yet. But until then I'm still suffering.

My symptoms are nausea i rarely get heartburn/indigestion it's mainly the nausea and I struggle eating as well especially in the morning I'm finding that more and more food is causing me issues. there is hardly anything I can eat without problems in the morning.

I do find rennies quite helpful (they have now made an orange flavoured one which makes it nicer than mint). But I try to only take them when I'm desperate because I don't want to become reliant or for it to become less effective. my consultant isn't putting me on any other medication because she believes all it does is hold it. They don't treat the cause, so that's why i'm just waiting for an endoscopy. What medication have you tried and what has been helpful??

Side effects I have had none that I'm aware of.

Please let me know how you get on

(my lung history is brittle asthma)

I take Ranitidine, I find Gaviscon after eating very helpful. I have aloe juice everyday too and warm boiled water.

I get terrible amounts of mucus and sore throats and coughs.
