Bronchiectasis and prednisone

I have a pain in my lung and I feel kind of like I might be getting an infection. I'm not sure. My doctor gave me some prednisone tabs quite a while ago and I refused to take them because it makes me feel so gross. I have bad experiences with prednisone before but now I'm wondering if I should take it because it looks like my sputum is just at the very start of beginning to change. Any ideas out there?

Hello Lindy-loo1949 .

I'm sorry you're not feeling well. How did the Prednisone make you feel unwell? Did you feel nauseous? Did you mention this to the doctor? If so, what was his evaluation on the matter? Did he give you any antibiotics? And the last time you took them, apart from making you feel "gross" did they help the infection?

I am on Prednisone everyday anyway. But I have rescue antibiotics. If my temperature is abnormal and I feel a bit cold-ish I rarely wait to take them.

*Hugs*

😢😱

Hi Lindy

I would get a check up to see if you have an infection before you take prednisone, you may need antibiotics.

Take care x

Lovely lindy,i agree with Happy Fran, get a check up as preds alone will not stop an infection as they are merely anti inflamatory i believe.Ok my dear lady go now.do as you are told and be a good girl for Skis and scruffy.Hope you get better soon.....................xxx

Hi Lindy, as you probably know I have had bronch for 64 years and I have never had steroids. There are not generally recommended for bronchiectasis ( you can look in the guidelines) unless there is significant asthma or obstruction with it. Your symptoms sound like a typical exacerbation and the treatment for that is the right antibiotic in the right dose for at least 14 days. I suggest that you go back to your doctor and gently educate them in the fact that you have bronchiectasis, not COPD which it apoears he is treating you for. Goid luck.

She and I have discussed that but she insists bronch and COPD are the same!

Oh dear. You definitely need to change your GP.

I would but g ps are few and far between! Been with her for 26 years, my specialist knows the difference at least! Thats what counts.

in reply to Lindy-loo1949

As it’s your GP who is writing the prescriptions I would make sure that your consultant writes to her, explaining the difference between COPD and bronchiectasis and informing her which drug regime to give you. After all, no matter how friendly you are with her, it is your ongoing health that is at stake and with bronch it is very important to keep on top of it. I hope it all works out. Unfortunately many GPs ( including my own) are all at sea when it comes to bronchiectasis. They have no training in it which is painfully obvious when I act as a patient for docs taking exams.

I've had bronchiectasis most of my 67 years too and have never had steroids.

I'd suggest you find a suitable clean small pot and take a sputum sample with you to the docs so they can give you the right antibiotics if you do have an infection.

😊

Hi Lindy, I have Rescue packs of both antibiotics & prednisone for my COPD but try not to take unless I know I definitely need them as we all know we can become immune to antibiotics if taken unnecessarily. I've had Pleurisy twice now & starts with a stabbing pain so just to make sure go back to your COPD Nurse or GP & get checked out again. Everyone take care now with all these flu viruses going about 😤 love K4ttt
