Hi, I am no expert but I believe that Interstitial lung disease (ILD), is an umbrella term for a group of lung diseases affecting the interstitium (the tissue and space around the air sacs of the lungs). Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the most common disease of this type. I hope this helps.

I was diagnosed with obliterative bronchiolitis, which is an interstitial lung disease too. There are about a hundred different lung diseases of this type, which cause scarring in the lungs, which is what pulmonary fibrosis is, so basically ILDs cause pulmonary fibrosis. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is PF of unknown cause, so can be worse. It is possible to be born with IPF. Although my condition is stable at the moment I have just started using ambulatory oxygen, which helps.

Hi Adela

Like Mummsy said Interstitial Lung Disease is an umbrella term for a lot of lung conditions including IPF and asbestosis which I suffer from but the generic terminology has played havoc with my legal claim for compensation as a lot of senior professionals would not commit to a specific diagnosis and name my condition specifically. I have been fighting the legal claim for over 4 years and hope to get it to the Royal Courts of Justice in late December, but it could be April 18?..... My main aim is to survive to see a conclusion to it and know my wife and kids will have a bit of financial support when I'm gone.

Take care

Owen

I wish you well. It’s very frustrating sometimes you never get a definitive diagnosis. My cousin has asbestos lung and he was awarded 13,000 and they told him they can’t help anymore. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
