Stuffy nose issues

Hi I'm Phil. I got diagnosed with copd in the January of this year but it's mild they say. I had a 2 week chest infection and cough last November and had an x-ray in December. They told me in the new year. Never knew my (sometimes) stuffy nose was down to that. It's not stuffy if I'm stood up and walking about though. Anyway I've tried Beconase for the 1st time today and it made me dopey and sluggish and little wheezy, but I don't usually suffer from breathlessness just have congestion. Thoughts any one? I'm 56 work full time not been off sick for months and still go to the pub once a month with a friend drinking 4/5 pints (not very) strong lager. Oh and I quit smoking 15 years ago now. Love to hear the comments of others!

Maybe some allergies meds that is what my lung doctor gave me.

I get a constant stuffy nose and I use a sudafed decongestant spray to help. I only use it when I really need it as I know they say you can become reliant on these things. It helps though when I can’t sleep or if I’m out for a meal and want to actually enjoy it etc. I know lots of people on here swear by saline nose sprays but I found they didn’t really help me. Hope you find the right thing to help you.

Please see my reply to parkylanestreet above about using Vaseline smeared around the insideof your nostrils to help with this. It was on the Asthma UK wesite a while ago and really helped with my hay fever/rhinitis and now I'm off any allergy tablets and have been for a couple of years. Long term use of Sudafed is not a good idea.

When I have a stuffy nose at night, I rinse out my sinuses with tepid salt water, which clears enough of the gunk out of the nasal passages for me to have a reasonable night's sleep.

I have used a salt water treatment for this too and it has helped.

Your story is very similar to mine, chest infection, cough, x-ray followed by mild COPD diagnosis in March. Just had a nasty 3 week bout of sinusitis which cleared up after a course of antibiotics and a steroid nasal spray. Usually I just use a sinex spray when I've got a stuffy nose, didn't realise it could be down to COPD. Always learning something new on this site! Hope you soon find a remedy that works for you.

Sounds like beconase doesn't suit you. I was given Beconase then Flixonase then Nasonex but it was getting worse. Then I realised the steroid in it aggravated the problem.

Sinus issues appear to be linked to respiratory issues and/or side effects of the inhalers used. Try a saline nasal wash like Neilmed, I prefer the Neti pot version.

Vick's First Defence nasal spray solved my nasal congestion problems and provides defence against flu bugs xx

I have used beconase but with not side effects. One thing you might consider for your blocked up nose, (I got this from the Asthma UK wesite) is to wipe a small amount of Vaseline inside each nostril and this keeps out pollen, dust and bacteria/germs as they stick to the jelly. I have used it for a couple of years now and am completely off any hay fever/rhinits drugs and have been for a couple of years. Summers used to be a pain but not any more. this may help with your nasal congestion problems.
