I'm new here, just recovering from infection exacerbated asthma.

Hi everyone, whilst on holiday this week I was taken poorly with my asthma. I have had a heavy cold for about two weeks too. I managed to get an emergency appointment at the local GP surgery and was diagnosed with a chest infection which has exacerbated my asthma. I was prescribed one weeks worth of Doxycycline (never had these before) plus 5 x days of prednisilone. Wondering why/how a cold, which is a virus, can end up as a bacterial chest infection? It always seems to happen this way for me (once a year approx) and I was just interested to find out more. Is there anyone else here who follows the same path with colds? Luckily I'm feeling a bit better after 2 x days of treatment so far. Many thanks.

Sorry you are struggling. I have bronchiectasis and asthma and always get a secondary infection following viral infection.

If you are new to Doxy please take precautions when in the sun as it is photosensitive.

Many thanks re Doxycycline and the sun, I didn't know that. Very helpful information. Hoping you are keeping well.

Yes same here. I've developed all sorts of movements to avoid others coughs n sneezes, if I catch them it ALWAYS turns into a bacterial infection.

Hope you recover soon peege. It gets so exhausting coping with infections and the resulting lung condition flare ups. I don’t think people really comprehend how bloody hard breathing can be. It’s scary and isolating for sure. This site is marvellous in you know you’re not alone. Take care of yourself.

Thanks everyone for your support and tips. I have been huddled on sofa all day waiting to get better and meanwhile reading all the asthma and lung disease posts here. Interested in getting a ‘survival pack’ of meds from GP. Never heard of this option before. My GP is excellent but I have a feeling I might have my work cut out getting the meds. I nearly always get poorly on holiday so it would make sense to be prepared. I already have my own travel nebuliser. Only used it a couple of times, again on holiday! Sleep tight folks.
