Hello everyone, my name is Ian, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Respiratory Failure in April this year. I am on continuous flow oxygen on setting 1 when sitting and 2 when walking and showering, I am on oxygen 24/7 unfortunately, but never mind there are people a lot worse off than me.

HI Ian,

When we're not being gentle with each other we resort to feather dusters and soft pillows to fight with 5 second rounds followed by two hours recovery time ;o)

Hi y_not,

That sounds fun, but I might need more recovery time.😁

Hello Ian and welcome, sorry to hear about your problem and hope you get use to it soon. Not easy trailing that lead everywhere you go is it? You trip on it stand on it as do other people but we get there in the end. I am just getting use to 24/7 having been on 16 hours a day for a good many years but its far better than being without.

Hi gingermusic,

Thank you very much for your welcome, yes you are right it’s far better than being without oxygen, from this week I am getting a Inogen One G2 portable concentrator from Air Liquide for when I go out or on holiday in the UK, it will save me taking 4 oxygen bottles when I go to Cornwall for the seven and a half hour journey by train, or 2 bottles for the four hour train journey to Peterborough to visit my sister and family.

I think I will be getting BPAP or CPAP machine for night time soon, I have got to do a home sleep study in a few weeks, they will then make their decision, but as I say there are people who are much worse off than me.😀

Hi Ian, I am with BOC for my oxygen so I have a large oxygen concentrator at home which is piped for use upstairs and down so I use that when at home and then a bottle of oxygen for when out and about. For holidays I just ring the holiday address to BOC and they arrange for the same equipment to be delivered to me where I am staying in the UK. Completely different ball game when I use to go abroad and a hell of a long hard slog to organise, so I have more or less given up on that idea now.

Hi gingermusic,

Yes I am the same with mine, when I went to Cornwall Air Liquide delivered the same there and when I go to Peterborough BOC do the same there, I also have the same installed permanently at my other sisters in Liverpool by Air Liquide. Unfortunately I am not allowed to fly anymore because of my oxygen level, we were originally flying to Cornwall from Manchester in April this year for my fiftieth birthday, it only takes 1 hour 5 minuets, but that was when I rushed into hospital.

Yes I have had oxygen delivered by Air Liquide depending where I am staying, I think they and BOC are part of the same company. I manage to fly ok as long as I have oxygen for the whole flight but my problem is that in most european countries the oxygen supplied for daytime going out lasts no longer than 3-4 hours maximum which stops you doing say a day trip or if you want to go out say early evening to eat then stay on for entertainment so I feel I am no longer getting what I want from holidays in Europe apart from the good weather of course. Still we should not complain as others are no doubt worse off than we are.

You say you are on continuous flow. I have just looked up the Inogen One G2 which you are getting from Air Liquide. It says 1 - 6 Litres Per Minute

on Demand Oxygen which I think means that oxygen is only delivered when you breath in. I know that some portable concentrators do no give continuous oxygen which is needed for sleeping.

Hi sarcoid1234,

Thanks for your reply, the Inogen One G2 is not for sleeping, it’s only for when I go out with family or friends, but mainly for when I go away on holiday, when I actually arrive there I will already have a concentrator installed. The Inogen just saves me from lugging four oxygen bottles as well as wheelchair and luggage.😀

Sorry to hear that you are on constant oxygen, it must make life very difficult. Everyone on here is truly lovely and their advice much more relevant. I hope that today is a good day for you! 😃

I’ve gotten used to the oxygen by now, it’s a small price to pay, the only thing that gets to me is no longer being able to fly when I go on holiday, that and no longer being able to attend Liverpool matches because of my oxygen and transport, today is a very good day. Thank you Fionab67😀

Glad to hear that you are having a good day! As for the football matches, well the team are not doing very well. Sorry I couldn’t resist, please forgive my poor excuse at humour.

HaHa, you are probably right, but it’s just the being there with people you know, up until three years ago I hadn’t missed a home game since 1994, but since moving where now live on the Wirral it’s awkward getting there and back, especially with all the matches being moved to accommodate Sky and BT.

Fionab67 profile image

Yeah, it’s totally different when you are in the middle of a crowd watching a game. I’m sorry that it has become so difficult for you. I used to run a pub in South Wirral so I know it is quite a distance to the ‘Pool. Is there a local that you can meet your mates in for the televised games? I know it’s not the best solution.

Hi Fionab67,

No I’ve kept my season ticket going, a friend now uses it, I’ll see how I am next season, I don’t like watching in the pub especially in the daytime and most of my football mates live in Liverpool, so I just watch it home.🙂

Fingers crossed that you will feel well enough to make it to the live matches next season then Ian!

Hi Ian, I've just started with home Oxygen in July this year, sometimes it gets me down dragging the plastic lead everywhere I'm on 8litres for 15hrs, can't wait to get my injection for covid and start going out again get our lives back,

Ian1967 profile image
Ian1967 in reply to Greenachers

Hi Greenachers, yes it’s a pain dragging round the long tubing, I tripped over a few times trying to avoid the tubing, as I said I was on oxygen 24/7 but since using BiPAP and oxygen at bedtime, I now only use oxygen ambulatory when I’m walking or exercising.

Like you I can’t wait for the vaccine for Covid-19, to be able to start getting out and about again to see family and friends.

Stay safe,

Ian.
