Hi all,
Can I ask if anyone experiences dizziness while having a coughing fit? This has recently started happening to me. It's getting so bad that I feel as if I'm going to pass out. Not happened yet but guess it's due to happen. I told my GP about it , and he said he'll check it out next time I see him. Not much compensation as it's happening now, and getting a bit scary.

Prolonged coughing can make you short of breath and in return you lack oxygen which can make you feel dizzy to the point of fainting ...try sitting down when your cough starts and lean your elbows on your knees to relax neck and shoulder muscles also try slow breathing technique if you can xxx

I use to press my lifealert cause I would fall off the couch which is a low couch n didnt have the energy to pull myself up. The emts came I was on the floorcmy walker knocked over n they asked were u trying to hurt yourself!!! I was so out of it from low Bp n O2 that I could hardly speak. . I use my sturdy walker to even go to the bathroom at night because4 yrs ago I fainted on the way to the bathroom. And when u faint it's not slow motion. N u dont put your hands out to stop because u are unconscious. Glad my friend was over . she said the entire fall caused the blood to be all over the bedroom floor. I broke my face n nose 7 surgeries because of that. They had to keep rebuilding my nose. Missed my brain by 1/2inch...not my time. So be careful when u get up sit at the end of the bed before standing. N if u are wobbly use a walker. Good luck to all. Have any of u been tested for vertigo?
I think I had heard that from a friend of mine if I remember right the doctor told him, occurs more commonly with him having lower BP, he got something for it. Sorry can't remember what he got, but best really to pressure your doctor to take this more serious. What happened when you are out or allone? Don't risk this!! Take care don't give up!! 🌹❣️🌹

I do get light headed and very breathless after a fit of cough, I've got IPF and it's one of my problems. I do hope your GP investigates this further sooner rather than later. Hope the dizziness doesn't get worse. Best wishes.

I used to cough so badly that I would simply faint! Stood talking to my wife then, seconds later she was looking down at me on the floor!
Turned out that the Marlboro I smoked caused me to cough real bad and the cough temporarily blocked a blood vessel supplying my brain, in turn this caused blackout, coughing stopped and I recovered .... just another of the joys of smoking (in my case) and helps explain why I stopped.
GP didn't seem too concerned about it at the time more concerned about the smoking that the blackouts (which I now understand).
Hi Grayjay, I experienced the same thing and on one occasion had a coughing spell in the Doctors surgery. He told me I was concentrating so hard on coughing I was forgetting to breath in every so often. He was right, it mostly cleared up when I stopped smoking!

Yes, happens all the time.
Have blacked out twice, apparently the brain shuts you down to stop you doing yourself a mischief.
I too have IPF and know how hard you have to cough to clear it sometimes.
I've found that having my wife tap my back percussively when coughing reduces the length and severity of the cough and also helps loosen the phlegm.
Try it, it may work for you to.

I shall try that too, will do anything to stop the cough. I am taking GABAPENTIN 600 ml three times a day and Spiriva inhaler once a day, but I still get the cough.
Spiriva, thsts the green one right? Forget it you don't have obstructed airways if you have IPF, it won't do you any good at all sorry to say.
N-acetyl cysteine or carbo cysteine will help a bit but you won't do any good with inhalers I'm sorry to say.
Had them all, lung disease is not a serious form of asthma!!!!
I do take carbocistine 3 times per day. But do start coughing in the morning after taking inhalers. VENTOLIN first then SERETIDE,and finally SPIRIVA RESPIMAT. It does make me wonder what the problem is. Trial and error I suppose.

Thanks Phil, you just have helped me a lot, will stop Spiriva and probably Gagapentin as really none of that has helped. About the N-acetyl cysteine was stopped by my consultant when I was on a clinical trial as he said that didn't do any good, so I will see what's happens next.

Yep get the same thing if coughing goes on a bit. Have you tried Carbocisteine tablets, they help to break down the mucus and make it easier to cough up. Also my re-hab course gave me a little gadget made by Clement Clarke International, it's about 75mm long with a sort of non-return valve so you can only blow. If you "Huff" into this small tube it makes you cough but helps to move the mucus easier. The only code on this little unit is CM20 2TT UK, haven't a clue what it is called but it does help.

Same here. In my case its probably due to blood oxygen levels falling into 70s as I have IPF, on oxygen and easily desaturate. I find it really hard to do anything about this most of the time but have found that sometimes if I increase the oxygen flow and try very hard to breathe in deeply through my nose (I'm on a nose O2 cannula) between coughs I am able to prevent the huge fall in O2 levels from occuring. In my case there are no risks of increasing O2 flow (CO2 trapping) but check with your doctor that a similar approach would suitable for you if you are on oxygen.
Fainting or 'blacking out' - Is caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. It's is your bodies way of making you lie down so it can pump more blood (oxygen) to your brain.
Remember to try get a breath in between coughs.
Bring it up again with your Dr. in a dedicated appointment.
It's called cough syncope, I had it and i thought the GP would be more concerned, but didn't take too much notice. I got just to the point of passing out but never did. A friend did pass out once and had to stop driving when he was diagnosed by his doctor, which is why I thought my doctor would give it more importance. There is a lot of info on the net including the NHS site. Syncope just means fainting. Your pulmonary rehab team should give you more advice in dealing with the problem. Good luck!
I'm not on oxygen yet, unlike a few of you good people but wondering if it would be beneficial.Who decided if I should have it. My GP or specialist ?.
In my case GP referred me to long ter oxygen therapy nurse at local hospital.
She assesed requirement and writes out script for o2 ,provided you need it.
Theres lots of stuff available.make.sure you get the best for you though.just settle for a bottle option there is lots to choose from.
I get this sometimes if I cough too much but never passed out. Also if I bend over, I suppose it limits your lung capacity when you bend, I struggle to get my breath. I have COPD/Severe uncontrolled asthma, my latest diagnosis and had pneumonia this year. It is a bit scary I must say.
It certainly is scary. I've told my G P but he doesn't seem that concerned. Had BP etc checked all OK. Seeing him soon for a check up. We' ll just have to take things catrfully.
This is happening to me even when lm sitting down l go tingly as well. I do have a lung condition that l got from my parrot as l was always kissing her. It is extremely scary so l know how you feel
I have coughing fits mostly due to acid reflux. It is very scary because the skin of my chest feels like is being pressed with thousands of needles when I cough. But now , for the first time, I also felt very dizzy. Once the cough subsided, both went away, but I wonder what is going on. I am 59 and was diagnosed with cervical spondylosis years back. I wonder if it’s all correlated.
I have been having similar experience as of the last week. I have had a deep chronic cough for three weeks. Dr diagnosed me with bronchitis. I have yet to call in or go to dr. For dizziness.
