O2 sats of 88%

Hello everyone,

I have persistent bacterial bronchitis and query asthma. I will be going for a methocoline challenge test in the next week.

However today I was at an uni open day and there was a section to do with the lungs. There was a oxygen saturation finger probe which I put on my finger, just to try it out.

It came up that my O2 was at 88%. I thought it was incorrect so switched finger, to which is rose to 90%.

Any other time that I’ve had it done at the GP etc it has ALWAYS been around 98-99%

I am 18 years old. I’m a bit lost as what to do or if I should be worried, as anything below 96% needs attention.

Thanks

Hi there and welcome to the forum. I can understand your concern and think you should certainly follow this up with your GP. However, one reading on one occasion is no reliable marker of any condition. The oxymetre you used could have been faulty, your hands could have been cold or maybe you have an exacerbation or infection that needs treating. Please try not to worry too much as all of us occasionally have very low readings. Just get it checked out.

Hello Billiejean has right, do not worry to much, I have most of the time 92 and it is still ok. I only get worried if I feel that something is not right mean if you really have struggle breathing then you should definitely talk to your GP. I believe that your doctor will tell you when something is not right and will take care of you to do the right thing.
