Hi,

Got my blood results back after switching hospitals and they found this.

Is this something to really worry about or just be really cautious as its mild?

Cheers

I don't know a lot about it. It's an inherited genetic condition and one of the causes of COPD. You can find more information here:

You could also try putting it into the search box to find other posts relating to it.

Thear is nothing you can do about the alpha 1 antitrypsin however you can help slow down the damage it causes to your lungs. dont smoke also avoid second hand smoke even bbq smoke is bad for your lungs. All air born polutants are bad for your lungs as you have less defence than somone with out the alpha 1. Try to eat a healthy diet and take plenty of exercise. Looking after your general health will help to look after your lungs i have the alpah 1 antitrypsin deficancy i find its the effect it has on my lungs that causes the problems and not the deficancy itself. Try not to worry but do try and get them infections sorted. Good luck

Alpha 1 affects people in different ways. It means you have a defective gene. So there is not much you can do really. Giving up smoking is the best thing you can do. Alpha1 means your lungs are not protected in the same way that other people are. So you are more likly to get infections.

I have this in a mild form along with asthma and copd.

Keep poitive and active

Hi I know very little about the genetic link but have heard your copd can progress a bit faster than someone without it. I think the treatments are the same though.

Hi there

I have 1of the alpha 1 antitripsyn gene

I was told that 1 is not damaging and 2 faulty genes are inherited from our parents and that is when it is becomes a health problem only

Are you a carrier of 1 or both?
