Morning headache

I went to see my GP this morning as for the last 2 or 3 weeks I've been waking up with a headache, feeling sickly and a little dizzy. It wears off after a while but leaves me feeling exhausted. I wondered if COPD was a factor.

GP checked my blood pressure, reflexes, eyes and balance and said she was going to refer me to a neurologist. Has anyone else had similar problems ?

Are you an oxygen user? If so ask about having your blood gases checked too. Morning headaches can be a sign of CO2 levels being a little high.

No I'm not an oxygen user.

Co2 retention could still be an issue.

Have you had a flare recently? As Mrsmummy says - you should get your blood gases checked

I haven't had a flare up or chest infection at all this year, although I've noticed I'm more breathless than normal and exercise tolerance is down a little. I was expecting to be sent to see one of the specialist nurses or a Pulmonologist. So I'm a little flummoxed by being sent to a neurologist. I did ask if the headaches could be related to the Emphysema. X

I'm not a dr but your symptons sound like co2 retention to me. You could have an infection without knowing it?

It needs to be checked properly because it is quite easily treated

Thank You, as I've never had blood gases checked who would arrange this GP, Nurse ?

The respiratory nurses can do it but it sounds as though you haven't been referred to a respiratory consultant yet? It would seem an obvious first step. Sue

RE: Morning Headache.

No way can I say you have this, but morning headache can be caused by lower than normal oxygen levels caused by 'sleep apnea' Do you snore? as this is also a sign of one kind of sleep apnea I would certainly have this checked by a doctor, if the Morning Headaches are regular. I have had these Morning Headaches from time to time, any more and I have to go for a sleep study. Just a though of a maybe cause, All the best.

Hi Ern, hmm I don't know if I snore, I live alone so there's no one to tell me..I'll see what the dr comes up with and I will mention this to them. Thanks

Had similar symptoms when I was put on Phyllocontin only the headache lasted 5 days so GP took me off it. It did however bring up some "gunky" mucus so good cop bad cop type syndrome. Hope GP can get it cleared for you.

Thanks Keith, I have no gunk to bring up, I have noticed my 02 sats on my pulse oximeter are lower than normal, so maybe they are dropping lower at night...I will get to the bottom of it.

Could it be related to high/low sugar levels? Joy.

I don't think so

Is there any possibility of carbon monoxide?
