Flu and pneumonia jabs

Hi everyone, I had my first flu and pneumonia jabs ever on Friday. The nurse who did them said that I should feel ok afterwards and that the worst likelihood would be soreness at the injection site. I have felt poorly since Saturday and when I checked online I seem to have got every side effect there is. I don't really have symptoms with my copd yet, apart from an infrenquent wheeze when I run, but today after exercise my chest feels quite tight and I have had the worse wheeze to date. Had to use my inhaler twice, which made me feel weird too. Has anyone else experienced negative side effects with these jabs? Love to all. Carolx

Yes I have Carol. Ive been having flu jabs for years and on at least two occasions Ive had what felt like very mild but still unpleasant viral symptoms. Ive always been told this is possible and your nurse should have told you. If I were you, I would hit the exercise on the head until you feel better. Since it's been two days now since your jab, I would call your nurse/GP on Wednesday if you don't feel better. Nothing to stop you calling now though if the reassurance would be helpful. And of course its not impossible that you could already have been brewing something so just keep a careful watch on how you are.

Thanks for the advice 02. I am quite sensitive to medication anyway, so wondered if it could just be a reaction. Also, it would be just my luck to have caught something in the doctors surgery. After all it must be one of the places that are rife with germs. Will definitely contact gp if I get any worse. Carolx

Thanks for your advice Angie. I just feel really rough, but no lumps on my arms. Will definitely get it checked over if I feel any worse, or it doesn't go off soon. Carolxxx

Thanks Angie. Exactly the same, worst headaches ever over the weekend and kept going cold. Haha, shifting a ton of earth is one way to get your arms nice and toned lol.xx

Exactly the same as me, but I have bronchiectasis and mild copd. Bad headaches all weekend, and very early this morning. Very tight wheezy chest too. Hope it was the jabs causing this because I've been pretty symptom free up to now. Don't know a lot about bronchiectasis,as far as I know it's never been active. Thanks little pom. Carolx

Hi Time_2_drink, my arms are fine. They were at a bit sore and heavy for a few hours, but are fine now. It's hard to say which jab has caused me to be like this. It could be one, both or neither. I will just have to wait and see. Thanks for your reply. Carolx

Hi time 2drink.....I wish I had been told that by my nurse. When I had my flu and pneumonia jabs, my arm was red, sore and swollen from elbow to shoulder...it did hurt and I felt rough. I thought it was normal !

It's a normal enough side effect to feel a bit poorly for a few days

Thanks for your reply. Feeling a bit better today. I just wish the nurse had mentioned it. Took me by suprise though. Carolx

Hi Carol, they should have warned you the general side effects can be a sort of flu together with aching muscles mainly in the arms. All should be over within approx 1 week, you can feel rough though. Sounds like they didn't give warning, I've had the flu jab for about 5 years, usually starts something, then the pneumonia only last year left my arm almost dead. We all survive it but it can sometimes be very unpleasant.

Thanks lkeith. I got scared because the nurse said it would be ok, and nothing about side effects. I've only been diagnosed for a few months so didn't know if it was the jabs or the copd. Feeling a bit better today though so it was side effects. Just thank goodness for this site. You can always good advice when you need it. Carolx

Hi, hope you're feeling better by now.

Luckily the year I had the pneumonia jab it was a separate time to the flu jab so I know jolly well that it was the pneumonia one. I felt dreadful for a few days.

I do know that it takes 2 weeks for the flu jab to have a protective effect, it's not instant, so you may have picked up a bug. I always take the usual precautions for two weeks after vaccination.

I do pity the few who who say "the flu jab gave me the flu" and decide never to have one again.

Keep drinking plenty and as O2 says, knock the exercise on the head until you feel better. X

Thanks for the advice peege. Feel a bit better today, but did go for a run and was tight chested and wheezy again. Will definitely be cutting the running out for a couple of days until i'm fully ok again. Carolx

The Health people will tell you it's coincidence but the first time I had the flu jab I got the heaviest cold I had ever had! It's never happened again and I don't even get as much as a sniffle anymore!

Thats right laines, i was told that if i got ill within the next 2 weeks that it was a coincidence and nothing to do with the jabs. Carolx

I know a lot of others too that this has happened to and If what we're told is true I wonder if it just lowers our resistance slightly and you end up catching something! I suppose we will never know. 🤔

I had both together with no side affects and none with subsequent flu jabs for 14 years - next one tomorrow!

Everyone is different, some have side effects ,others don't.. I have Aspergers, now just called Autism, that makes me very sensitive to lots of things.. My Dr asked me if I wanted the flu jab recently..I refused as my chest been clear this year ,no chest infections..usually have one at least yearly.. SO did not want to risk coming down with anything through the jab..Good luck all..xx
