Hi

It's a antibiotics used in the event of a chest infection, not necessarily associated with COPD.

used mainly as a prophalactic antibiotic taken on a one a day basis.

Yes it's used as a maintenance dose of three days a week and does significantly cut down exacerbations ,I know a lot of patients that have taken it for quite some time with good results ,however like all drugs it can come with side effects so is prescribed on a risk - benefit scale

I take roxithromycin every day. I have found it helps to keep any greeblies my family brings in with them and also when I go shopping I don't seem to pick up as many bugs as I used to.

My consultant told me he would have put me on it to keep exacerbations at bay, but because I have an irregular heart beat he decided against it. xx Moy

I use it as a prophalactic antibiotic taken Three times a week. I had been on doxycycline daily for about three years. It didn't stop chest infections, just reduced the number. After a particularly long infection - about 5 months, I asked my lung consultant if this was my life now and he changed my antibiotic to azithromycin, and this week I've realised all my symptoms have mostly cleared up - coughs up greenish sputum all day, other cold like symptoms and post nasal drip! I actually feel 'normal' for the first time in five years and it's all down to azithromycin!

Hi Helen your message very interesting as I have just been prescribed azithromycin by my specialist. Just going to get some from the docs this Thursday but I think nature has beat me to it as I have caught a cold from my grandson and although it has only broke today I can feel it going on my chest already. Still keeping my doctors appointment but do not think it's worth taking until after I get over this. Like you my infections go on all winter and I never seem to get rid of it. Other antibiotics do not help much and I feel my life is a right off from October onwards.

I can honestly say I feel better than I have done for a long time! Hasn't stopped the post nasal drip or the runny nose, but hey, you can't have everything!
