Which is the more beneficial?

My goal at PR was to walk up a slight hill which I haven't been able to do for about a year, SOB, I didn't achieve that, however yesterday I did it and today with relative ease. I'm so pleased. However, the hill is on a mainish road, not a lot of traffic but enough. So is it better to work hard walking up the hill in spite of the car fumes or to have an easier walk down the lane, no traffic, just a level walk? Lilian xxxxxx

Hi

Walk up hill on the side of the road facing traffic coming down, away from kerbside.

A walk on a quite lane is just as beneficial.

For hills, do step up, on first stair tread at home. Start with right leg first, then left leg first. Aim for two minutes.

Thank you Stone, I think that's a good idea an easy walk down the lane, and I'm walking further now, then, after a cup of coffee, 2 minutes step ups. How long have you been diagnosed Stone? Lilian xxxxx

Hi

About ten years, probably had it a lot longer, not really a Doctors person. Prior to diagnosis last time I saw a GP was 1962 when I was 15.

That's good Stone, not seeing a doctor for 50 years!! I think your diagnosis was about the same time as mine but for years before I had trouble going up anything but it didn't bother me until the chest infections started then I was diagnosed. You have so much knowledge about this condition much more than my GP or the nurse at the chest clinic. Lilian xxxx

Thank you roey, my daughter suggested the same thing as you. I also like Stone's reply, walk down the lane and 2 mins step-ups. I hope you are well roey. Lilian xxxxxx

I would alternate days the hill the lane etc and then when you develop your strength and will find a longer lane and a bigger hill lol as things get easier good luck and well done you xxx

I thought you might say that Angie, a longer lane and a bigger hill indeed!! You are right it is so much easier now than it was a few months ago, thanks to this forum and, of course, PR. Lilian xxxx

Good for you!!! And I would choose walking the lane and if you can time yourself between two points... so you are able when you are ready increase the speed, or begin to carry a backpack with say a book in or some weight to increase the load 😊

Do you have a fit bit ? They are great to counting daily steps?

TheBLF has a good DVD on useful exercise for us all . Good luck !

Thank you Polly. I think the backpack is a good idea I will try that. The increase in speed also sounds good but I think I would be dragging my 2 elderly dogs behind me. I think I will get a fit bit, I had a step counter a few years ago but when the battery went I didn't replace it. Hope you are well. Lilian xxxxx
