Hi, It is my understanding that very early emphysema has few if any symptoms. It is usually diagnosed while looking for another condition ( CT lung scan). The progression can most definitely be slowed down to a crawl if you QUIT SMOKING and get regular exercise. Meds may not even be needed for years. Emphysema is progressive and permanent. It can never be reversed only slowed down.
Odds are there were few, if any, symptoms prior to diagnoses. We can stop or slow down the progress (especially in early diagnosis, but there is no cure or 'reversing' the illness). At least not yet. Hope this helps. Hope is vital to all of us.
Let me clarify that we cannot 'stop' it, but can, with healthy practices and not smoking, we can slow its progression. You will read of some EARLY diagnosis visitors here having gone 25 years, and still going well (relatively).
I, had a CT scan to check for another issue, it was fine. But, mild emphysematous changes were found. That was I believe last fall. Don't smoke, or be around anybody or anything that smokes!! I, also don't go around smelly products over perfumed persons. Healthy food. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise!!! And, stay away from sick persons!!! You can't really reverse it, so they say, but you can slow or halt it in its place. So far so good.
