Anxious about chest xray

Hi

I'm 51 and had recurrent chest infections this year which I put down to be infected by my 4 year old adopted SEN daughter who is always coughing on me.

Chest X-ray showed left pleural thickening which looks long standing and I've got to repeat in four months.

I have no idea what caused this and what it means for the future. I've always had mild asthma but now worried as my dad died of lung cancer, my grandad of emphysema and my mum has COPD.

I'm still getting over latest infection... coughing up phlegm for over 3 weeks with constant ache between shoulder blades , but haven't felt unwell with it.

Can anyone explain to me what long standing thickening is and what it could mean for future health.

I can only tell you about me from my experience as I'm not medically qualified, but I've also got pleural thickening that's been there for years. I have no idea how or when I got it but it doesn't seem to be of any interest or concern to the consultants I've seen. Saying try not to worry is easy to say but hard to do. I know. Hopefully you are seeing your GP/Consultant and they should reassure you about it and offer other tests if necessary. If you feel you want further investigations ask for them. By the way, I'm 64 and had mine since childhood apparently. I hope that helps a bit.

GeorginaS I am a 55 year old male. I was a smoker for 25 years but have quit smoking recently. I recently suffered from pneumonia & the next chest x-ray showed pleural thickening. I am very tensed about asbestos diseases. Can you please update your condition now? Do you have any asbestos related disease? What was the cause of your pleural thickening?
