Hi I'm new here. It's like finding friends. I have bronchiectasis following a severe pneumonia 18 years ago. After multiple useless treatments of antibiotics I was given the anti fungal drug, itraconazole. I think the side-effects were worse than the disease.
Has anyone else taken this medicine? Would like to know your experience.

Hi Rosieho, itracanozole is an anti fungus drug. I have had bronch for 64 years and have never been given it to fight the infections associated with bronchiectasis. However, some people react to a fungus called aspergilla or in severe cases can get it in their lungs if they are damaged and susceptible. Anti fungal drugs are used against this. Do you have a bronchiectasis specialist consultant or is your GP trying to treat you themselves and just clutching at straws? Have your blood and sputum been tested for the presence of a reaction to aspergilla or the presence of a bacteria that hasn't been treated with the correct antibiotic, in a high enough dose for a long enough period of time?
If you don't have a bronchiectasis specialist now is the time to be referred to one. You can find one on the internet. Try looking at your nearest big teaching hospital. Bronchiectasis is complex, we are all different and it changes continually as well as over time. This is why we need consultants who have expertise in its treatment, not simply general respiratory consultants or GPs who have almost no knowledge of it.
