For over a year now I've had something when I lay on back or right side it feels like after a few minutes of laying on back when I take deep breath it's Luke my lung has been collapsed. And I can feel it getting the air back in it. It's weird. I've been all the way to vanderbuilt university to have PFT and all any dr says is it's my acid reflux making my muscle around airways spasm? I'm short of breath a lot. I do have SEVERE reflux in my esophagus anyone had this? What was your symptoms and what was cause?

other then avoiding certain foods and not eating 2 to 3 hours before you lay down to help avoid the acid in your stomach coming back out into your throat is to sleep on your left hand side as the entrance to your stomach is on your right hand side.

acid reflux can course shortness of breath as it can also have an asthma effect on your lungs by the acide vapour that can find its way into them.

this the best way i can find to explain it!

if you have severe reflux talk to your doctor about an operation you can have that helps to close the entrance to your stomach.. i cant remember what it is called but am sure someone on here will know what am talking about.

good luck.

Great description UB40

Acid reflux can cause permanent damage to lungs and/or oesophagus; are you receiving any treatment for it? PPI drugs (ending azole eg omeprazole etc) or Ranitidine are the usual ones or even Gaviscon.

Raising the head while sleeping is typically recommended, pillows, foam wedge under mattress, blocks under bed legs etc.

If you have hiatus hernia an operation might be suggested.

The dietary suggestions include no spicy food, no alcohol, no tea, coffee or cocoa, restricted fatty or fried food. Since the dietary a dive wiped out most of my diet I pretty much ignored it but have had an op to put my stomach back in my abdomen. Much better since then but left with bronchiecstasis.

If your quack says 'severe' you need to get it sorted. See the GP again if nothing further has been offered.

I had a lot of problems like losing my voice, constant coughing was due to acid reflux burning my vocal chords I have been on Esomeprazole and Ranitidine for 20+ years and 8 years ago I had a Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication (LNF) where the top piece of my stomach (Fundus) was wrapped around the bottom of my esophagus. This uses the stomach muscles to close off the valve at the bottom of the esophagus to stop the acid going up and burning the esophagus and vocal chords.

This has stopped the croaky voice, losing my voice, heartburn etc. I have raised the head of my bed so I do not lay flat, I have to avoid fizzy drinks, beers & lagers as I do not burp as much as I used to and as any gasses don't come up, they have to go down so I have to watch what I'm eating also, but I am a lot more comfortable than I was before the operation.
