I was diagnosed with copd about five years ago. I am now recovering from a really bad flare up. This was the worst attack I have ever had, really couldn't catch my breath, quite terrifying and nearly voluntarily went to hospital. Realise now that I do have an incurable disease. Scary.

Hi Jes, Yup, realizing that one has an incurable disease is indeed scary - very scary. BUT, what's that old Beatle song "I get by with a little help from my friends" ... and that's what we do here. We manage to share the good days and look for a shoulder on the bad days. Fabulous place for general information on all manner of COPD topics from supplements to rehabs to surgeries to where to go for help. Thank goodness for this group! You will like the support and camaraderie. Glad you're on the recovery from a flare-up.

Sorry Think I got your name wrong at quick glance it looks like Jess. Glad you are feeling a bit better. Do you get sickness with the antibiotics some people do.? Hope you are soon totally recovered. x

Hi, Jess is fine. Yes I'm allergic to penicillin which doesn't help. I think that's why antibiotics make me feel so horrible. Many thanks for your concern. The old saying the kindness of strangers springs to mind. Best wishes to you and keep well.

Hello there my mum used to be severely allergic to penicillen ect so understand how you feel. I'm allergic to loads of medical stuff mainly due to asthmatic genes. Speak to you again soon goodnight for now.

My nurse when I told her of a fright like that said : Another time ring 999 straight away. That is exactly what we are here for. We all want to help you. Promise? Thankfully it has not happened again as she is watching over me . Love the NHS.

Hi, it was actually terrifying, when I told my doctor she said it would be appropriate to have called 999. I hate being ill! I suppose this flare up is the first time the copd has really impacted my life. But all the good wishes from everyone on this site have made me feel a lot better. Many thanks x

welcome Jess...sorry you had such a scare! yes, our lungs are not doing their job but sometimes we forget and think we are invincible and WHAM the exacerbation decide to stroll through just to shake us up and remind us!

Hi JES51, "nearly voluntarily went to hospital" - can I suggest that about 12 hours before that thought you needed to go! I took your view and, when I eventually gave in they said "Why did you wait so long ... sometimes when people come in like you are we can't get them back!".

I'm still learning when the "right time" is but it always seems to be hours/days earlier than I think! Twice this year I've been "blue lighted" to hospital!

Each exacerbation destroys another little bit of our lungs so why wait (God, I wish I'd listen to myself!)

Glad you're on the mend - worth talking to the GP about emergency medication (if you don't already have them)

Hi, I agree should have gone to hospital days before I saw my doctor! Just always hope I will recover on my own. Stupid really, what can I say? Need to take more care of myself and realise that this disease is not going away.

JES51, welcome to my world! I could have written your reply - I like to think that I know (most of) the answers ... just never apply them to myself!!

I'll keep learning and trying to do the right thing ... just don't know how long it will take for me to heed my own advice! ;o)

Hi, thank you for your message.It would seem that these flare ups can occur at any time. According to my doctor the last one was in 2013. Just when you thought it was safe! Regrettably I do smoke about 5 cigarettes a day. Know I shouldn't but... no excuse really all things considered. Thank you for your kind welcome, keep well and best wishes.
