I have had anxiety/panic disorder many years and also graves disease and am on various medications but my anxiety recently got worse and I wondered if thyroid was to blame so I saw my GP.i went in feeling quite nervous as I find it difficult expressing myself face to face and he asked about symptoms checked pulse and tremor and then he asked what was wrong with my voice and I said I get a shaky voice when nervous or anxious then he wrote on paper respiratory assessment and said he wanted me to go for it and a chest xray ,his exact words were to see the state of my lungs...then he said he would listen to my chest so he did that and said nothing about it.i cannot understand how I go to him for help with my anxiety and thyroid gland and end up being asked to have lungs checked, theres nothing wrong with my lungs and breathing,i have had anxiety/panic for 40years and I notice myself that talking to strangers or answering questions meeting new people ect always makes my inside feel shaky and it effects my voice, just as my thyroid gland did.i am just confused about tests on lungs when I told Gp I do not get breathlessness problems.

Hi, Bev, and welcome to the site. It sounds as if your doctor wants to make sure that your lungs are okay, and is checking the sounds he's hearing in your voice are just due to your anxiety. Do you smoke at all, or have you ever smoked?

HI I think your doctor is being very thorough and wants to rule out any other issues. You are very lucky as most doctors don't seem to bother these days.

A friends son went to the doctor about another issue and he picked up on something from his appearance which worried him and sent him for heart tests. He did indeed have a heart problem but unfortunately died of a massive heart attack before his tests were completed.

So my advice is trust your doctor as s/he is a medical expert and go for the tests.

Good Morning Bev. Welcome to the forum. I agree trust your doctor & be thankful he's thorough. Hope the wait is not too long. Do let's know how you get on & keep posting if it helps to relieve your anxieties even a little.

Good morning bev1958,

I, too, have anxiety and am being treated for it. I believe that your doctor is being cautious by ordering a respiratory assessment and chest x-ray. Neither of the them are invasive so please be ok with that.

Have you ever been a smoker? I was for most of my life. I came down with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy. Shortly after that I was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and have been dealing with that along with COPD, emphysema, severe bronchitis and asthma. A few months ago I suffered a compression fracture of my thoracic spine. It was and still is very painful. Talk about anxiety!!

Your doctor apparently wants to make sure you are doing OK. I would have the assessment and the x-ray as he suggests. It shouldn't take long. You might be glad you had them done.

I wish you a lovely day. God bless.
