Hi,

I have been on Carbocisteine for 5 years now, it has helped thin the phlegm and helped me clear it off my chest. I was really having a struggle clearing it. I have had no side effects with it and I am drinking plenty of water to help thin the mucus out too.

That is the same dose I am on when I have a have a lot of mucus to thin down and clear. Have a read of the leaflet enclosed with the tablets. Using them, together with breathing exercises such as the Active Cycle of Breathing and drinking water will do wonders for clearing the chest.

Hi I haven't been on them long ( about 20 days ) but they seem to be working. Only downside is I am spitting in to tissues a lot to get rid of the mucus ! Not good in a work environment . Hope they work for your dad xx🐝

I have the same problem, plenty of tissues at hand to spit mucus into. I just explain to whoever I'm with "I'm really sorry and I do hope you will excuse me doing this but it's the only way I can clear my chest. I've never had a negative response and my friends font even notice now. Xx

Greatbanks profile image
Greatbanks in reply to Jummie

True. Tissues I used loads ,'but I agree I find it awful if out I cannot help having to cough into tissue and find my self apologising every time I do it ! People think they can either catch something off you it's not a germ it's so demising sometimes , and the look of disgust you can get 😢. It's that ingrained in me. Now I find it's part of automatic response I cough and then say sorry !!

A respritory consultant told a group at a Breath Easy meeting that it is OK to swallow the mucus!!! Sounds revolting but it might help your situation.

I have been on this medication for about a month. It does seem to be working, especially when I am in bed. It would be so good not to worry about chest infections. x

I'm on about week 6 of these and have just started to feel the benefit.. you also need a good routine of clearing the chest as I wasn't doing this to begin with (wasn't told to by my dr) and I found I was coughing more than before! Now I've got into a good routine of clearing things are better.. I am better than I have in a long while! However it is warner weather and I've taken up swimming both of which are helping too. Hope he gets on ok with them x

Hi busybee🐝 yes I try to limit the amount of dairy products, apparently they tend to make mucus thicker, not a nice subject I know but it's something we have to deal with, I also exercise as much as I can and have taken up Tai Chi this helps my breathing.

Hope this is of use to you, take care, by the way I love bees🐝🐝

Hi Bird

I take the maximum 2x 3 times a day and they seem to easy the mucus but in addition I use a nebuliser twice a day and drink pineapple juice and Ginger tea both of which are assumed to ease the Mucus I haven't had a cup of tea or coffee for a while now as I always started to feel throat thickening up shortly afterwards ?

Will try anything to ease / loosen the mucus

Take Care

Hi I've been taking carbocisteine to clear mucus for about 4 months, at the rate of 6 per day 3x2 morning mid-day evening. In the early days they do bring it up especially in the morning.it also makes you cough which initially takes about 3No attempts at clearing your throat but it does come out eventually. Have found no side effects and their easy to swallow capsules. Drink plenty of water to help thin the mucus.

I have been using carbocisisteine for many years, but It is difficult to say if it is effective, At present, I am suffering with heavy mucus which is difficult to shift and very tiring. I have an annual appointment with my chest nurse next month and I will discuss this with her. This mucus problem started last year when I was prescribed Sirdupla, which made me ill. Best wishes to your husband, Albert, 82.

I found it totally ineffective and was more than happy to stop taking yet one more chemical compound. Only thing that shifts anything for me is the nebuliser with either Salbutamol or saline in it.

To be honest I struggled for years moving my rubbish on my chest , carbrosistene

Was a saving grace I have 2capsules in morn and evening I was glad to be prescribed it , some practises don't because it's expensive !

Hello Bird-67 . I have been on them for a few years. They make me a bit dry so I try and drink lots of water. Other than that no other issues. I hope they help your husband. Best wishes.

Thanks, they are helping a bit but still early days so fingers crossed.

I hope it works for you, many people swear by it. I seem to be one of the few for whom it just doesn't work out, makes me even more breathless and gives a bad headache. But, as I say, it seems to be an unusual reaction, so could well be fine for you - I hope so.
