My son went through 18 months of coughing. The Docter's gave him Asthma inhaler, which made it worse. It was a harsh, dry, from the lung cough.

He was coughing so hard, he saw stars !!!

They gave him tests and it was GERD getting in his lungs. He was given a stronger medication and he learned that bread, caused it most, so he avoids it now. xx

I found out that the pneumonias I've had were from aspirating stomach fluid from GERD. The GERD is from hiatal hernia. Had 3 pneumonias since December, and they were all caused by aspiration pneumonia. Hope this info helps you. :)

Short answer is a definite yes but this is a really complex one so I would ask your doctor to investigate as he will know the issues.

Do you have lung disease and are you taking PPI drugs long term for your GERD and are you are on a standard dose ?

Hi Salmo

Thank you for message. I Take one Omeprazole daily. I am worried in case this constant cough is something sinister.saying that I seem to have a cold with it.

This is one of those impossible to work out situations where you need a doctors help as there are so many possibilities.

Constant cough could still be be due to GERD even if you are taking a PPI (omeprazole). Some people find they need to take PPI twice a day or take higher doses to control their GERD and in some case this also helps with the cough. I found this but there is no clinical evidence this works and many other folk find GERD meds do nothing for their cough.

On the other hand, if you are taking PPI long term there is also a very slight possibility that the chest infections could be due to the PPI since there is some clinical evidence that some people on PPI have more lung infections than those not on PPI. This is a really low risk (so dont stop taking your omeprazole !!) but may explain your chest infections and those ay explain your cough.

No idea how you work out which is most likely which is where you need a doctors help as there are some further tests they can do that might help.
