I would recommend PR after every exacabertion - it is scary how fast one loses muscle and confidence but PR soon gets you going again. Our only problem seems to be that PR has been privatised in our area. Now less accessable and equipment not as good

Im shocked that PR has been privatised in your area Breatheasy. There's so much privatising happening in the NHS but hadn't heard of it with PR before. I with others campaign against privatisation and cuts in the NHS - we keep a note of privatisations we hear about of different services. If you felt able to pm me any details, e.g. what area you are in, and the difficulties you or others may have had in getting referred, Id be very grateful. I hope you can get onto a course as PR really does help a lot after infections.

It doesnt surprise me they are doing this we are losing most things on the NHS .When I was referred for PR by my GP I had to wait months I really need to go again has I have had a bad few months but no doubt will be a long wait again xx

Overall Im not surprised either shadow - like you say its everywhere and I'm heavily involved in campaigning about that. But I had a kind of intake of breath when I read Breatheasy's post - I hadn't heard of a PR class being privatised before.

Glad your breathing course works for you Graham.Ive done two courses and know people in my area who have done three. And now we have an ongoing "maintenance" weekly session for people who have completed the PR course - the same exercises facilitated by respiratory physios but they don't intervene much, just there to oversee it. I find this great as I loathe gyms, too much risk of catching viruses there.

I get exactly what I need from the regular PR session Graham, and really get to push myself. I would be happy to go to a gym if the machines weren't so near each other and users so frequently ignorant about hygiene control - coughing everywhere and I've been sneezed over before. After two years without a chest infection Im not about to risk getting one in a gym, enough risks just being out in the world without getting so close to sweating hard breathing ppl!

I think you have to have two years in between PR courses - you can't just do them whenever since like everywhere there is a big waiting list.

Hi copdme I don't understand why PR is different in different parts of the U.K. We should all have the same thing. I have been on 3 PR courses and athe moment I am doing a follow up course at my local gym for people with long term health problems. I was referred to it by my physio at my last PR course. For Hour on a Monday afternoon it lasts for 16 weeks. It's cardio exercises although I am breathless all the way through it. I really enjoy it. And at the end of the course you get membership for the gym.
