If you live in UK you cant give blood AS anyone asked why.

6 Factors That Mean You Can't Donate Blood.

And bottom of list is People who have spent long periods of time in countries where "mad cow disease" is found, such as Great Britain, are also not eligible to donate, regardless of how long they have been away from it.

Bet UK gov don't tell tourist visating uk that little snipit.

Anyway i thought blood products was sterolised SO why can't those with tierd immunty have transfusion immunty imported.

I neve knew that, and I suppose you have to consider the safety factors involved in imported blood. But I understand what you are saying. 😊 xxx Bernadette

I used to give blood regularly but the rules changed about 15 (?) years ago and I could no longer donate because of the mad cow disease thing - I'd had two pints of blood after the birth of my first child!

Interesting read but as it was from across the pond some of these don’t count as they are usually knee jerk responses.

When asked in America "What do you think we should do if aliens landed" Over 40% said they should go though immigration control first?

I must thank those that have as the 6 pints I had in ICU helped me though my stay.

These rules have been on the go for years. .....When you think about it ,,it makes sense.

Just as blood and blood products from the USA were restricted due their technique s in blood handling and HIV...........Not sure of new changes since my days in haematology.

Hi.......Over here we prepare every bag of b!ood as donated.....

I don't know now what the practises are in the USA ,. But it used to be that each unit of blood when collected was mixed with other blood of the same group...... and Anyone could donate ........Hence the problems if infection.

Here every blood doner undergoes a strict health check before blood is accepted ,then it undergoes path lab tests before being made available

Know thats very brief , but there was a real problem here ........

Hello JeffAjaxSmith,,,,I knew there were certain medical conditions and some outside, trends that would prevent you for certain periods of time,,having ears pierced,,,tattoos,,,blood has only a certain shelf life,,,I do not know about sterilizing it though,,,life is so complicated these days,,,ttfn from karen.

I was a regular blood donor for many years. At each session more questions were added, dental treatment, tatoo, etc. and then countries / places visited,Chernobyl etc. After a trip to Brazil I was told I could never donate blood again. I never did find out why. Not sure I want to know :)
