Hello all. I'm new here

I'm warren 49 and asthmatic from birth. Stopped smoking last September. My chest is terrible now. It's not the asthma as this is under control. It's constant loss of breath even tying shoelaces. I can sit still and my breath just goes and I struggle to breathe. I feel a weight in my chest. I can't walk too far and this is affecting my job as a building site manager.

Blood tests, X-ray and ECG all came back as clear. GP says it must be anxiety and has prescribed tablets but chest still gradually getting worse.

Thanks for reading this I just need the right help or pointers please

Kind Regards

Warren

Possibly stress, giving up smoking must have been very hard for you.

Welcome to you. I would go back to your GP because your chest is getting worse. It could indeed be stress so try and practice relaxation therapy if you can. Take care and stay positive. Xxxx

Have you had a change of inhalers at all...are you having to use more Ventolin?

Perhaps you need a review of your asthma medication....I know some preventers suit me better than others.

Have you tried the pursed lip breathing technique when you get short of breath....it can help some people . Breathe in very gently from the belly through your nose ....then out very gently through pursed lips .....repeat a couple of times.

Try to breathe through your nose the rest of the time so that the air is warmed and filtered .....relaxed belly breathing with a relaxed upper chest and shoulders.

But I would check your inhalers , especially the preventer.

Best wishes

Hi have you had a recent spirometry test? is it possible you have copd? You need to speak to your doctor. x

Hello Warren

I know how you feel...I have asthma but also COPD.

I am not stressed and felt like you.

You need to have a spirometery check to confirm this at your GP's, it's strange he didn't suggest this .

Phone up and make an appointment for one.

If it's Positive, you will get medication that will help.

Good luck xx

Hello Warren.

I am sorry you are having a difficult time with your breathing. I think getting a second opinion may be a good option. It sounds as though you are struggling a fair bit. Please do let us know how you are. We are always here to listen.

Take care.

If you are short of breath and it's getting worse, please go back to your doctor - and don't be fobbed off with the stopping smoking excuse; after four months you should be seeing an improvement.

I would also agree that you should go back to the GP for a second opinion. See someone else this time. GPs seem to quote stress as the answer to everything. When I went to the GP when first unwell with severe breathlessness amongst many other symptoms It was put down to possible stress and I was then sent for routine blood tests to "set my mind at rest". Once the bloods came back and there was a renal issue another repeat test was done and following this result another GP got involved immediately and moved like wildfire as she realised I was becoming very ill. I still see this GP regularly as she is absolutely fantastic and has looked after me so well ever since. As others have also said please don't be fobbed off with being told it's stress. You know your own body and when things are not right. Hope you get to the bottom of things and feel much better soon x.
