So sorry to hear that. I am great believer in distractions and treats. And tiny goals. You are still here, use all the good breathing techniques that you can remember, and also relaxation. Your mood will lift, and if it all seems impossible go and see your GP. I am always happy to listen or in our case read a good story. So tell me more about yourself.

Thanks K I'm a 44 yr old male with four kids ageing from 21 to 3 years old I have stage 3 copd emphysema I was diagnosed with stage one 3 years ago but just couldn't stop smoking I have stopped now but I only have 45% lung capacity I'm very scared and emotional and am suffering from a flue like virus just now that is causing me a lot of pain sweating and stopping me from getting any rest.I feel ashamed of the damage I've done to myself and to my young family and terrified that I only have one stage to go, I know I need to exercise to help slow it down and lose weight which I'm trying to do I only drink water now and no sugar but feel so weak I'm not getting to move about much, I suffer from depression and anxiety problems which I've dealt with for many years but my diagnosis and the recent death of my father suddenly at the age of 63 has just destroyed me.I hope this isn't coming across as self pity just not coping well but really appreciate your comments and your kindness x

My first thought on reading your reply is that I think possibly the majority on this forum have a smoking history. And I can see that that is just a horrible extra burden to carry. There is nothing you can do to change the past. You are here and now. You are in the right place, you have taken the first and most important step: to stop, and have have succeeded. You are young, that is always a plus, you have a massive motivation to keep going for your family, you are --- yes, I mean it --- searingly honest. And brave. To come on this site and to be open about your fears and anxieties is truly courageous. Good for you. You have insight into your situation, and self-awareness. There are many here who have stage three COPD and have lived for a long time. I know the old hands here will suggest pulmonary Rehabilitation. This will help to get you active and you will get information about your condition.

Keep going, hug your children, and tell us how things are.

Hi Sjm2020 , sorry to hear you are feeling so ill. Have you seen your doctor about the poor breathing and pain? Do you have the medication you need? I hope you can get some help and feel better soon. x

Thanks toci was at docs yesterday and was told it's a flu like virus that's causing the pain and bad breathing just now but been feeling like this since before Christmas and just can't shake it the doctor told me to rest take paracetamol and drink plenty but it just doesn't want to go away.Just so low and can't seem to pick myself up just now very worn out.Hope I'm not coming across as a moaner.

There have been some nasty viruses this winter. Stay strong, rest and wait it out. We all have a moan at times because we share things here. If we are having a good time everyone celebrates and if we are down they rally to pick us up. Can you tell I like them a bit? ;)

And please don't worry so much. I was 'end stage' when I was diagnosed, having just thought I had a bad smoker's cough. That was 10 years ago and I am still here and still plodding on with no intention of going anywhere anytime soon. We have chest diseases - they don't have us. :)

Have you done a sputum sample and had that tested. I feel for you. I am 58 and had to have IV antibiotics so was in hos for 2 weeks. Been home 2 weeks now. I.my infection was diagnosed with a sputum sample. Maybe a chest x Ray too. If you don't feel better you should go to GP again or even A&E if you get worse. I was due to see my consultant on 9/1/17 but went in via A&E in the end on the 31/12 as felt so ill and breathing so bad. Good luck.

Hi Sjm, perfectly understandable that you feel so down at the moment. You are unwell and have had lots to deal with. Sadly the loss of your dad at such a young age being just one.

You can always come on here to chat as there is always someone who will listen.

Please get help from your GP and rest assured things can and will improve. Take care of yourself. Xxxx

Thank you for your kind comments and if I'm not feeling any better in next day or too I'm going back to my go.You take care also xxx

Hi Sjm we all get down sometimes. Are you on any meds for your depression? There is also a very good depression site on here called Action on Depression. It's a very friendly site.

Please don't beat yourself up about carrying on smoking as many of us here have caused this to ourselves. We still don't deserve it though and we are just the unlucky ones. No one ever thinks they are going to get smoking related issues, but what's done is done and you can't change it.

What you can do is practise damage limitation and determine from now on that you are going to try and be as healthy as possible. Concentrate on the future and not the past as this is under your control. There are many on here with less than 45% lung function and have been for years. None of them are going anywhere soon so you have a lot of living to do yet. x

I take trazadone for the depression but to be honest I don't find it's working at the moment I think I'm just overloaded, I will look up action on depression thank you for the advice and your kindness xx

You are very welcome Sjm. x

Maybe the doctor needs to think about trying you on a different medication if the one you are on is no longer working for you. Don't put a brave face on things, tell them straight how you are feeling.

Hi SJM, sorry to hear you're feeling so unwell and sad today. It's not easy to stay cheerful when you're really sick. Have you been sick for a while or is this a recent exacerbation ? Either way, it's no fun feeling miserable. I think all of us here have those days now and then so at least we all understand where you're coming from. I have Bronchiectasis and get a lot of bad infections. These infections always make me really short of breath and I have a lot of pleuritic pain with them. I hope that chatting here will help distract you and that you will soon feel a little better.

Hi Sym2020 I think depression goes hand in hand with COPD I started swimming a few years ago when I was diagnosed always liked the water and did competition swimming at school. I also meet up with other people at the pool who have become very good friends last night we went for Chinese.

Today it has been really cold hear and I'm feeling as if I'm coming down with the flu take care we are always hear

Hello Sjm2020,

I hope the messages have been coming through to you. Do not despair. please go back to your doctor and explain in detail just as you have done here. You have an awful lot on your plate looking out for and after your family. There are times with copd when you really feel that this is it, but it is not, by any means.. Many of us have smoked, some like me, heavily, for 50 years, some not at all. You have to forget about it, what 's done is done and in the past and we do not apportion blame. Copd or lung disease of any sort can hit anyone at any time. All you will receive from members of HU is support, advice and friendship, so no earthly need to feel like you do. Life goes on, and your life will go on with the right medication, exercise, and help, and help from your Nurse at the surgery, and that is why we are here too. Please don't let it get you down. It definitely is not the end of the world, believe me:-)
