Is a lot of mucus one of the delights that come with Pulmonary Fibrosis?

Yes it is You seem to cough lots more and loads of mucus. If you know what helps that please post. Regards Trudy

Hi Trudy86 "Welcome" to our community.

Medication is available to help shift mucus if it is a problem to you. My wife takes Carbocisteine capsules which helps to thin the mucus making it easier to cough up. I am sure there are equivalent medications available as well. She also uses a Flutter Device which she finds helpful and drinking lots of water also helps to thin the mucus.

Hi Lizzy1898 I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in November 2015. At the time of diagnosis I only suffered with a small amount of mucus which seemed to be stuck in the top part of my throat. The amount of coughing I was doing at the time didn't seem to shift it either. The treatment I have received over the last year includes long term antibiotics (Co-Trimoxazole) and steroids (Prednisolone) and my mucus problem has cleared up.

I dont know if Pulmonary Fibrosis sufferers normal suffer with lots of mucus but I didn't. PF is caused by by a variety of things though, so depending on what has caused your PF may affect whether or not you get a lot of mucus.

The other thing to bear in mind is that lots of mucus may indicate that you have an infection in which case you will need to see your GP to get it treated.

I can only speak from personal experience and I hope i have been of some help to you.

Hi Lizzy,

A bit like pastmebest said,there are different types of PF. Not all cause a build up of mucus, that is really common with COPD sufferes as they have blocked airways so inhalers help and do get a deal of mucus. PF isnt usually about blocked airways its more about the damage done through scarring and thickening. I do sometimes feel like there is a build up in the back of my throat but not often. That's why if you are coughing excessively and experience chest pain etc its worth seeing a doctor as we can get chest infection without the mucus. This is what my consultant as said to me obviously I'm only giving my opinion.

One other thing I've had numerous chest infections and pluerisy since last May which I've had antibiotics and steroids. My consultant wrote to me and my gp to say that steroids did me no good what so ever and in fact could make me worse. Again he said steroids can be used to treat COPD but not some forms of PF .mine is caused by rheumatoid nodules in my lungs from rheumatoid arthritis. . Hope thats of some help. I have the same as well as I do cough a lot trying to ease or suppress the cough I do need a suggestion to calming the cough and yes thick mucus is associated with pulmonary fibrosis

Unfortunately it is .I take musinex in the morning and evening I also gargle to loosen it as it's very thick
