Pseudomonas FLUORESCENS

I have pseudomonas FLUORESCENS in my lungs. I'm on the second course of ciprofloxacin 500mg but it doesn't seem to making much difference. Has anyone else had this? Which antibiotic works?

Thanks,

Vicki

Hi there VickiFo,

I wanted to reply to you so that you do not feel as though you have been left on your own. There are quite a few of us on here who are colonised with pseudomonas aeruginosa. If treated with cipro this is usually 750mg twice per day for 14 days minimum.

What is confusing me is that pseudomonas fleurescens is associated with plant growth and I cannot find any information in which it has been found in human lungs. This is probably puzzling the others as well. Do you have a lab report stating that this is the strain in your lungs? If that is the case I suggest that you go back to your consultant and pin them down as to the treatment of it. GPs have enough problems understanding the treatment of pseudomonas aeruginosa so will definitely need specialised advice as to how to treat that one.

Good luck.

Thank you Stillstanding63. I can't find anything about Pseudo fleurescens either. I can't get in to see a lung specialist until Dec. I do have lab report. The antibiotics are making me feel rotten. I'm taking probiotics.

Thanks 👍

VickiFo If the Cipro is making you feel rotten can I urge you to speak to your doctor who prescribed them.

I have had a few courses of Cipro 500 since 2013 and lately 2 courses of Cipro 750. I was fine until the Cipro 750. With the first course I experienced Acheson my calves at the beginning of the course, then developed extreme tiredness and began to feel 'down' which isn't like me. I didn't think to mention this to my GP when I went back after 10 days after finishing the course with symptoms of Pseudomonas back again and he gave me another prescription for 14 days. After a week I started to develop stabbing pains all around my midriff area and lung area and by the time I could get an appointment with my GP I was on the last day of the course and felt as though I had been kicked in the ribs I was on so much pain.

GP said to stop the Cipro, not realising I was on the last day. It appears it has caused rib cartilage damage. I'm due to see him again tomorrow, 2 weeks after stopping the Cipro, to see how things are. The pains are less, more like occasional prodding than stabbing, but obviously damage jas been done.

So if I was you I would check the patient information leaflet to see if what you are feeling is a known side effect, but also talk to your GP as you may need to come off it.

I wish my GP has followed the consultant's advice to use IV antibiotics if my infection didn't clear up after the first course of Cipro, and I'm kicking myself that I didn't think about that when he prescribed the second course.

Thanks SeasideSusie, appreciate your reply. I don't have pains like you did but will keep your advice in mind.

Regards,

Vicki

But if it's the antibiotics that are making you feel rotten (and it doesn't have to be pains like I had) then it's a side effect and you really need to tell your GP. I wish I hadn't waited.
